The turmoil in the U.S. banking sector has had a negative impact on the market for initial public offerings (IPOs) . IPOs raised just $19.7 billion this year, down 70% from a year ago, according to Bloomberg data. That is the lowest level since 2019. Of that, just $3.2 billion has been raised through IPOs in the U.S. Shareholders and companies were quick to sell stock early in the year to take advantage of the stock market rally. However, that rally largely fizzled as the Federal Reserve continued to ramp up interest rates to cool inflation. The problems in the banking sector following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank have also had an impact on companies' IPO plans. Secondary offerings have been the sole bright spot, raising $76 billion this year, a 48% increase from a year ago. Companies like electric vehicle maker Rivian have also turned to convertible bonds to raise money more cheaply. Some $6.4 billion in convertible bonds have been issued globally so far this … [Read more...] about Global IPO Fundraising Slows, Weighed Down by Banking Sector Turmoil

Funding For Biodiversity Efforts Is Now Available To Wine Growers In Bourgogne
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Rows of tidy vineyards can be a beautiful sight, but winemaking regions around the world are becoming more aware of the drawbacks of monoculture on the farm. When one type of crop is cultivated to the reduction of other vegetation and wildlife, the system can become imbalanced. Environmental scales are further tipped when chemical or high-intervention practices are employed to control the influence of nature and weather. But wine producers have been encouraged by the benefits of biodiversity, an increase in the variety of life existing in an area — in this case, the vineyard and surrounding spaces. Biodiversity has the potential to inhibit disease and pests, support healthy water systems, increase soil fertility, aid pollination, and promote beneficial species. The Bourgogne (Burgundy) region has recently announced funding to build biodiversity within its climats. (Climat is a local term that identifies Bourgogne vineyards as … [Read more...] about Funding For Biodiversity Efforts Is Now Available To Wine Growers In Bourgogne

Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Widely circulated reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating $20 billion crypto exchange Coinbase are just the tip of the iceberg, according to a staffer from U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis’ (R-Wy) office. The staffer says every U.S. crypto exchange—and the largest crypto exchange in the world, Binance—are in various stages of being investigated. There are more than 40 U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges, according to crypto data site, CoinGecko. The SEC has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Coming in the wake of a number of SEC actions asserting the regulator’s domain over the crypto industry, and an equally strong response by the U.S Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) pushing back against what it characterizes as “regulation through enforcement,” the staffer says the SEC urgently wants to resolve its dispute with the CFTC over crypto jurisdiction. If the matter isn’t … [Read more...] about Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer

What Crypto Investors Need To Know About NFT Tax Changes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Crypto continues to have a rocky 2023, with one of the most recent announcements being a pending lawsuit against Coinbase by the Securities and Exchange Commission. While the SEC continues to hammer on virtually every crypto-native organization or service provider, there are other issues that investors need to keep in mind. Winners And Losers Reveal The Market’s Flavor This Year: Nvidia Is Up, Pfizer Is Down
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You can understand a lot about this year’s stock market by looking at the winners and losers among the nation’s biggest stocks. Among the 167 stocks with a market value of $100 billion or more, the best performers this year are: · Nvidia (NVDA), up 83%. · Meta Platforms (META), up 71%. · Tesla (TSLA), up 55%. The worst performers are: · Pfizer PFE , down 21% · Bank of America BAC , down 19%. · ConocoPhillips COP , down 16%. Underdogs As if often the case, I’m more partial to the losers. Let’s start with Bank of America. Spurred by the failure of Signature Bank and Silicon Value Bank, bank stocks have fallen hard. Bank of America stock now sells for less than nine times earnings. Its average multiple in the past decade has been 14. That sounds like a chance to buy a good company on bad news, which I love to do. But banks are suffering because short-term rates have risen above … [Read more...] about Winners And Losers Reveal The Market’s Flavor This Year: Nvidia Is Up, Pfizer Is Down
NRRP: The Italian National Recovery And Resilience Plan
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In the pompous language that so distinguishes all acts of public administration in Italy, this is the name given to the special Plan that, thanks to a generous injection of European funds, should heal the wounds caused by Covid and, above all, allow Italy to relaunch and definitively modernize. The Plan is an ambitious one, the resources are huge (235 billion combining European funds and Italian contributions), the opportunity is unique. Its declared aim, to be achieved through a series of interventions including public works, regulatory adjustments, and so on, amounts to three “transversal priorities”: equality of gender, of territory and of generation. In other words, aside from the pomposity of the language, the intent is principally to reduce the economic and social gap between the North and South of the country in order to favor the entry of women and younger people in the job market. The voluminous NRRP document also … [Read more...] about NRRP: The Italian National Recovery And Resilience Plan
Tencent’s Cash Dividend Weighs On Meituan
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Key News Asian equity markets were mixed overnight on light volumes as investors worried about financial contagion. Hong Kong had a volatile day as Jack Ma’s visit to China lifted Alibaba and the market, a rally that ran out of out of steam in the afternoon. Baidu fell -3.17% due to rumors of a delay in its ERNIE chat bot launch. Meituan fell -6.28% and was today’s most heavily traded in Hong Kong by value after the company’s Q4 financial results, which were announced after the close on Friday, beat estimates. The stock’s drop is likely driven by Tencent’s decision to deliver a cash spinoff of Meituan, rather than shares, which obviously requires selling Meituan shares in the open market. Healthcare was the only positive sector in both Hong Kong and Mainland China after CSPC Pharma’s mRNA Covid-19 vaccine was approved. Mainland markets were off though “outperformed,” i.e. they fell less than Hong Kong as CNY and the … [Read more...] about Tencent’s Cash Dividend Weighs On Meituan
