Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, the Canadian government made a landmark judgement that permitted four terminally ill Canadians the legal right to use magic mushrooms for end-of-life distress . The compassionate decree was the first of its kind in Canada since 1974 when magic mushrooms (containing the psychoactive substance psilocybin and known to ease end-of-life fears) were made illegal through the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act. One of those initial four people allowed to experiment with the newly legal mental health treatment using psilocybin was Laurie Brooks, who is also the central character of the documentary DOSED 2: The Trip of a Lifetime . The film follows Brooks, who in 2018 was diagnosed with late-stage terminal cancer and given 6 to 12 months to live, as she makes her way through a journey of acceptance of her own mortality, aided considerably by her psilocybin experiences. Growing up in a devoutly religious family — and … [Read more...] about Film ‘DOSED 2’ Explores Legal Psychedelic Therapy, Highlights The Changing Landscape Of Mental Health Care

FBI searches Florida home of former US president Trump

August 10, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Brian Ellsworth and Sarah N. Lynch (Reuters) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Florida, United States   ● Wed, August 10 2022 Former United States president Donald Trump said FBI agents raided his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday and broke into his safe in what his son acknowledged was part of an investigation into Trump's removal of official presidential records from the White House to his Florida resort. The unprecedented search of a former president's home would mark a significant escalation into the records investigation, which is one of several probes Trump is facing from his time in office and in private business. The US Justice Department declined to comment on the search, which Trump in a statement called a raid and said involved a "large group of FBI agents." The FBI's headquarters in Washington and its field office in Miami both declined comment. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content … [Read more...] about FBI searches Florida home of former US president Trump

August 8, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) Data obtained by CNN from New York's largest health-care provider indicates you're very unlikely to become severely ill with Covid-19 if you're under age 60, up to date on your Covid-19 vaccines and don't have underlying health problems, backing up a government plan expected to be announced this week that will ease up on coronavirus restrictions . If you're young, healthy and vaccinated, "you're going to be in a pretty good place," said Dr. William Schaffner, a vaccine adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "You're going to be well-protected." CDC expected to ease Covid-19 recommendations, including for schools, as soon as this week The data from Northwell Health shows that of the nearly 2,000 people hospitalized there for Covid-19 in May, June and July, about 80% were over 60. Nearly 90% had an underlying health problem such as hypertension or diabetes. Vaccination status was also critically important. … [Read more...] about Under 60, healthy, vaccinated and boosted? ‘You’re in a pretty good place’ with Covid-19

Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses

August 9, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) The Biden administration is preparing to move forward with a plan to stretch the limited supply of monkeypox vaccine doses that would allow providers to use one-fifth as much per shot, two people familiar with the plans said. The Biden administration is set to announce a new emergency declaration as early as Tuesday afternoon that would enable providers to inject one-fifth of the currently authorized dose into the skin, rather than a full dose into underlying fat. The move was first reported by the New York Times. Change in monkeypox vaccine injection method could mean more doses but may not be easy, experts say The move comes less than a week after the Biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency, which gives the US Food and Drug Administration and other government health agencies more flexibility to fight the spread of the virus. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said last week the FDA was considering a … [Read more...] about Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses

The pill that could make routine injections for millions of patients obsolete

May 3, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

It looks like an ordinary pill that’s roughly the size of a fish-oil supplement. But when someone swallows the capsule, they don’t digest it. Instead, when it makes its way into the intestines, it uses a tiny dissolvable needle to give a painless injection. advertisement advertisement The device, called the RaniPill, is the winner of the health category of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards , and it’s designed to solve an important challenge: Millions of patients have conditions that can be effectively treated with injections, but many of them avoid taking shots. advertisement advertisement The company, which raised $73 million in an IPO in 2021, currently has five drugs under development—all already approved, and most off-patent, for conditions including cancer and rare diseases—to test the efficacy of their use with the auto-injector. The next trial will test how the pill performs with an osteoporosis drug … [Read more...] about The pill that could make routine injections for millions of patients obsolete

Better Solutions For Rx Problems

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The reconciliation bill Democrats in Congress are about to pass will impose price controls on prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries (although they are couched in terms of price negotiation). Critics note that the measure would lead to fewer new drugs , fewer cures, more avoidable deaths, and higher drug prices for the private sector. University of Chicago economist Tom Philipson estimates that because of the price controls there will be 135 fewer new drugs in the next two decades – causing a loss of 331.5 million life-years in the U.S. That is a reduction in life spans about 31 times as large as from Covid-19 to date! Still, public opinion polls show high approval for the proposal. Why is that? In all likelihood it’s because voters realize there are problems that need solving. Here are some better solutions. Give Medicare enrollees access to rational insurance. In a proper insurance … [Read more...] about Better Solutions For Rx Problems

DOH: Still no basis to allow boosters for kids ages 5 to 11

August 10, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Children ages 5 to 11 are still not eligible for COVID-19 booster shots despite the resumption of in-person classes this month, as there is still no scientific evidence to support the need for booster doses for that age group, according to the Department of Health (DOH). “Until now, evidence is still incomplete, globally, regarding booster shots for 5 to 11 [years old]. For now, the [primary or] first two doses are still enough to protect them, especially against severe and critical infection,” Maria Rosario Vergeire, officer in charge of the DOH, said in a press briefing on Tuesday. She emphasized that focus should still be on ramping up inoculation for the primary doses, as she cited the latest DOH data that only 4.2 million, or about 40 percent, of the 5-11 age group have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “We’re still looking at 60 percent of this eligible age group who need to get vaccinated,” Vergeire said. “Let’s try to encourage mothers and legal guardians to have … [Read more...] about DOH: Still no basis to allow boosters for kids ages 5 to 11

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are countless ways for one to connect with a destination. For the gastronome, local flavors are telling of a country’s diverse culinary culture. Art and design enthusiasts will most likely head to museums, architectural landmarks and gallery spaces as a means for enriching the travel experience. Adventure seekers will head to less-beaten paths, all in search of an adrenaline rush. For the beauty and wellness advocate, healing traditions of a region are the biggest draws for packing a bag and hopping on a plane. It was in May of this year when Malaysia finally opened its borders to foreign visitors. It had been over a decade since my last visit to the beautiful Southeast Asian federal country. A full spa tour itinerary was an opportunity to return and get to know the Malay Peninsula better.
