For many investors, retirement planning represents the bulk, or even the sum total, of their investment activity. As of 2020, there were roughly 60 million active 401(k) participants, in addition to former employees and retirees. But while millions of adults in the United States contribute toward retirement, views on retirement investing and all that goes along with it are anything but uniform. Investopedia conducted a online survey of 4,000 U.S. adults to quantify Americans’ understanding of financial literacy on a generational level, from baby boomers down to Generation Z. Below, we explore some of the top findings of this survey as it pertains to retirement investing and planning. Key Takeaways A small majority of U.S. adults expect to retire, with Gen Z the most optimistic about retiring early. Two-thirds of millennials and Gen X adults are planning for retirement, as are 42% of Gen Z members. Younger generations believe that cryptocurrencies will feature … [Read more...] about Multigenerational Survey Shows How Retirement Planning Is Changing

This Founder Just Gifted LLCs to an Entire Graduating Class
How do you inspire a bunch of new college graduates to start their own businesses? One Atlanta entrepreneur believes giving them access to their own LLCs is a good bet. On May 14, Pinky Cole , the founder of booming restaurant chain Slutty Vegan , announced that she would give each of the 800 graduates of Clark Atlanta University, her alma mater, the ability to register a limited liability corporation, in partnership with Varo Bank, a fully digital bank. The cost of filing an LLC varies on the basis of the state; in Georgia, it's $100. On average, it costs roughly $50 to $250. "Every single graduate in this audience will leave this stadium as a business owner," she said during the school's commencement ceremony on Saturday. "I didn't have a plan, but I'm going to make sure that you do." Cole graduated from the historically Black research university in 2009 with a major in mass communication and media studies. While the now 34-year-old entrepreneur went on to … [Read more...] about This Founder Just Gifted LLCs to an Entire Graduating Class
Exactly how to think about every skill you’ve ever built and showcase it in a job search
What does it take to be a successful candidate? A college degree? Won’t hurt. Prior job-related experience? Still a big talent pool to beat there. Not too long ago, hiring managers placed a precedent on soft skills when hiring talent. In fact, a 2019 study found that 92% of talent professionals and hiring managers agree that candidates with strong soft skills are increasingly important. Before this, employers focused primarily on a candidate’s ability to contribute hard skills such as how well they can write, code, use Microsoft Suite, etc. advertisement advertisement Now employers and hiring managers are looking for well-rounded candidates. Not only do they want the candidate to be an excellent accountant, but they also want that individual to demonstrate solid communications skills. Furthermore, after surviving a pandemic, employers are eager to hear about a candidate’s life and career skills, among other transferable skills. Why the 9-to-5 schedule has lost its place in the workplace
The old adage that “time is money” goes way back. It’s typically credited to Benjamin Franklin, and it describes the long held belief that more time spent working equals more success. And that may have been true at one time, for some anyway. In the agricultural era, more time in the fields meant more crops getting planted or harvested (of course, that only worked for the owner of those crops or those being paid by the hour or bushel to work the fields, rather than slave labor or indentured servants). Even still, much agricultural work was unlikely to continue after sundown and it’s often seasonal, unlike what took root during the Industrial Revolution when a large part of the labor force moved from field to factory to work on a set daily schedule. advertisement advertisement As journalist Celeste Headlee, author of Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving , put it: “Before the industrial age, time was measured in days … [Read more...] about Why the 9-to-5 schedule has lost its place in the workplace
Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Anthem and Cigna on Friday morning announced a historic $54 billion merger that would make the new, combined company the largest health insurer in the country, by total customers. The deal's size is especially notable. (It's the largest-ever merger in the insurance industry). And the timing is remarkable. Just three weeks ago — to the day — rival insurers Aetna and Humana announced their own mega-merger , a $37 billion deal. If both deals get federal approval, America's Big Five health insurers will be winnowed to a Huge Three. So what happens next? And what will it mean for consumers? Anyone who says he knows those answers isn't worth trusting: America's health care system is in uncharted waters. First, there are real questions over whether either or both mergers will receive federal approval. The Department of Justice was already scrutinizing the Aetna-Humana deal — which now … [Read more...] about Anthem Just Paid $54B To Buy Cigna. No One Knows What Will Happen Next.
Greedy Pharma CEO Cancels 5,000% Price Hike — But He Didn’t Fix The Real Problem
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin America is outraged — outraged! — that Turing Pharmaceuticals hiked the cost of a drug called Daraprim by 5,000% last month. (The drug is used to fight infections in patients suffering from AIDS and other conditions.) What took everyone so long? Turing CEO Martin Shkreli is a repeat moral offender. He pulled off similar price hikes at his previous company, before getting fired and sued for $65 million. Martin Shkreli, the CEO of Turing, says the company will cancel its planned 5,000% price hike to a ... [+] drug used to treat infections in AIDS patients. (Paul Taggart/Bloomberg.) But there's a much bigger problem than Shkreli here: The skyrocketing cost of generic drugs. It's nothing new. And it hadn't gotten much attention until this week, partly because most pharma companies aren't run by evil executives who happily explain they're making a profit by over-charging AIDS patients. Here's an … [Read more...] about Greedy Pharma CEO Cancels 5,000% Price Hike — But He Didn’t Fix The Real Problem
Allianz fund managers’ paydays could be followed by prison
- A + A (May 18): He was a hedge-fund manager supposedly under the watchful eye of a “master cop” — an Allianz SE unit that policed his every move. Instead, US authorities say, Greg Tournant sold lies to investors that cost customers, and now Allianz, billions of dollars, and resulted in a guilty plea to federal charges of securities fraud by Allianz Global Investors US. News on Tuesday that the US unit of the German insurance giant was admitting guilt over the collapse of its Structured Alpha group of hedge funds leaves many questions unanswered, including a big one: Will Tournant, who had told investors Structured Alpha would do well whether markets went up or down, end up in prison? For Allianz SE, Tuesday’s development brought an end to legal headaches that have engulfed the German insurer since the funds imploded in March 2020, when financial markets reeled during the early days of the pandemic. The demise of the Structured Alpha funds is just the latest … [Read more...] about Allianz fund managers’ paydays could be followed by prison
HSBC’s mass of Hong Kong retail investors warms to breakup
- A + A HONG KONG (May 18): Smarting from HSBC Holdings Plc’s move to scrap its dividend during the height of the pandemic, the bank’s largely silent mass of retail shareholders in Hong Kong is warming up to the idea of a breakup. Splitting up Europe’s biggest bank to separate out its Asian operations is being pushed by its largest investor, Ping An Insurance Group Co, based just across the border in Shenzhen. The call is winning support in Hong Kong’s retail base, which owns about a third of the bank, with some seeing it as a surefire way of preventing the steady stream of payouts from being cut off again. Their loyalty has been tested as numerous pivots in strategy fail to impress the market, leaving dividends at half of what they were in 2018 and the stock down more than 40%. The former British colony is the beating heart of the bank’s global operations, accounting for about 30% of the group’s 2021 adjusted profits. Yet decisions such as the halting of dividends … [Read more...] about HSBC’s mass of Hong Kong retail investors warms to breakup

Thailand News Today | Crashed China eastern flight possible “intentional nosedive”
Black box data on crashed China Eastern 737 suggests possible “intentional nosedive” Investigators are now examining further if the crash of China Eastern Airlines 737-800 on March 21 was indeed due to “intentional action on the flight deck”. The early reports say that there is, so far, no evidence of a technical malfunction. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that flight data from one of the two “black boxes” on the Boeing jet indicated that “someone in the cockpit intentionally crashed the plane”. The comments were made by people the WSJ cited as “familiar with the preliminary assessment by US officials”. US National Transportation Safety Board officials have been working with engineers from Boeing and investigators from the Civil Aviation Administration of China since the crash. Boeing, the US manufacturer of the jet, has so far declined to comment on the early leaks and, instead, referred all questions to the Chinese regulators. At this stage, the CAAC, … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Crashed China eastern flight possible “intentional nosedive”
