advertisement advertisement advertisement Big Hit Entertainment, the South Korean company behind the boy-band phenomenon BTS, is expanding a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group and its Geffen Records label in an ambitious attempt to replicate the successful K-pop formula—and the social media virality that goes along with it—with an American music company. advertisement Company executives, including UMG chief Lucian Grainge and Big Hit CEO Bang Si-Hyuk, announced the move Wednesday on VenewLive, a live-streaming platform launched by Big Hit last year in which UMG recently became an investor. This map connects people in need in the Texas freeze with nearby volunteers

· February 18, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Three and a half years ago, as Hurricane Harvey dumped as much as 60 inches of rain in parts of Houston and flooded more than 200,000 homes, two local software developers sitting in a flooded office quickly hacked together a website. Anyone who needed help could post a request, and then anyone who was able to volunteer could quickly connect with someone in need. advertisement Now, as Texas reels from an ice storm that took out power, froze the water in faucets and toilets,  caused some ceilings to collapse as pipes burst, and made it dangerous to drive in a car-dependent city, the service, now a nonprofit called Crowdsource Rescue , has been taking the same approach to make mutual aid easier. A map on the nonprofit’s site shows hundreds of tickets with people asking for water, food, generators, and other basic supplies, or for help with transportation to a safe location. advertisement advertisement advertisement We’re reaching the one-year mark since we were made to work from home (WFH). As business leaders, we have a responsibility to stop employees from despairing, hitting walls, and falling into isolation. advertisement advertisement Injecting fun into your workplace as we build a new year—and a new narrative—is an effective adhesive to stop teams drifting apart, and to remind them that we still haven’t lost that sense of unity. The initial productivity boost from WFH is giving way to exhaustion , and the more tired we are, the less we are able to nourish our social self. With less watercooler interaction, … [Read more...] about See problems as supervillains—and 4 other fun ways to fire up your remote teams

· February 10, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement After an earthquake or flood, the emergency relief tents that are often sent by aid organizations to people who lost their homes don’t last long—after six months or a year, the tents will probably become trash or, at best, be used for scraps. But nonprofits are now testing a new type of emergency shelter: a simple structure that could be built within hours, but that could later be adapted with local materials to become a more permanent house. advertisement advertisement Structure . The Ikea Foundation-backed nonprofit first launched flat-packed shelters in 2015 as Syrian refugees were fleeing to Europe. The original shelters, with sturdy panels to make up the walls and roof, a door, and the option of solar panels, are more expensive. The new shelter, with a simple frame that can be covered with a tarp and eventually recovered with other materials, is nearly four times less costly, at … [Read more...] about These quick-build disaster shelters can later become permanent houses

advertisement advertisement advertisement Editor’s note: The authors are the principals of M+D, which helped develop the Fast Government concept and may receive revenue from the partnership. advertisement advertisement Even before the spread of COVID-19 necessitated a series of large-scale government interventions, there has been a long-simmering sense that the public sector needs to up its game. The tech industry needs a regulatory overhaul. The urgent problem of climate change requires new infrastructure and public works programs at grand scale. The pace and complexity of issues like food security, economic inequality, and workforce displacement—not to mention coordinated pandemic preparedness and response—all require governments that are better, smarter, stronger, and faster than the ones we have now. Yet, the pipeline of talent dedicated to solving these monumental policy challenges is not in place. More than a third of … [Read more...] about Government needs innovators, entrepreneurs, and disruptors
