Landmark: Fed Court rules that crash victims should be automatically compensated

August 10, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): The Federal Court has ruled that road accident victims should be automatically compensated without having to sue insurance companies, according to a report by Free Malaysia Today . In delivering the landmark ruling, Federal Court judge Datuk Abdul Rahman Sebli said the provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987 should be construed to protect all motorists, including victims of road accidents. He also said that Parliament's intention in enacting the law was to protect innocent third-party road users. According to the news portal, Rahman said this in a 140-page judgement on a decision delivered by a three-member bench he led last week — the two other judges were Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim and Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang — that allowed the appeals of eight motorists, seven of whom were injured in motor accidents. Five of the appeals involved Pacific & Orient Insurance Co Ltd, Amgeneral Insurance Bhd, Allianz General Insurance … [Read more...] about Landmark: Fed Court rules that crash victims should be automatically compensated

DeSantis May Lose Suit By Tampa Prosecutor He Fired For Pro-Choice Stance

August 5, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis purged Tampa’s elected prosecutor, Andrew Warren. Warren had pledged not to prosecute people who seek and provide abortions. Warren had not actually had any such cases before him. DeSantis is, of course, vying for the Republican nomination for President in 2024. DeSantis has been taking shrill steps – Warren called this a “political stunt” - to woo the future primary voters, and to fundraise from those well off, with Trump views. Still, there is a real clash here. There are many blue enclaves in red states, like the Democratic cities in Republican Texas. Since the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade there will be a new world of potential for prosecuting women or doctors or their helpers, even out-of-state helpers or organizations, for any part in abortions. It is entirely possible this is the first of many clashes between red state Governors and State Legislatures and … [Read more...] about DeSantis May Lose Suit By Tampa Prosecutor He Fired For Pro-Choice Stance

(CNN) President Joe Biden delivered a bold speech on Thursday night , calling for a ban on assault weapons and other gun policies, including strengthening background checks and enacting new "red flag" laws. "Enough, enough," he told the nation, urging Congress to take action after a slew of mass shootings rocked the country. "We can't fail the American people again." The speech comes at a difficult moment for Biden. The administration is facing multiple escalating crises, which are slowly undermining his leadership and political strength. ANALYSIS: A Dem Dark Horse Has The Power To Trample The GOP In 2024

July 8, 2022 by dailycaller.com

The Democratic Party won’t allow President Joe Biden to have the final word on whether he’ll be the party’s candidate in 2024. The door is conveniently open for other candidates to make their case on why Biden should step aside, and Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom seems to be doing just that. Newsom is a true Progressive Democrat who handily defeated a recent recall election and looks poised to win reelection for a second term in November. The California Democrat signaled his quest to become the Democratic Party’s 2024 Presidential nominee over the July 4th weekend when he paid Fox News $105,000 to air ads during their Independence Day programing to urge Floridians to move to California, according to CNN. “It’s Independence Day. So let’s talk about what’s going on in America. Freedom is under attack in your state. Your Republican leaders, they’re banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom … [Read more...] about ANALYSIS: A Dem Dark Horse Has The Power To Trample The GOP In 2024

Opinion: Putin’s prisoner swap calculus

July 13, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

Jill Dougherty is adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a former CNN Moscow Bureau Chief. The views expressed in this commentary are her own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Some of the most dramatic -- and diplomatically delicate -- moments in United States-Russia relations are linked to prisoner exchanges. Jill Dougherty February 10, 1962: In a Cold War, Hollywood-style trade on the Glienicke Bridge between Berlin and Potsdam, two men -- an American and a Soviet -- walked in opposite directions across what would decades later be known as the "Bridge of Spies." They were Francis Gary Powers, the American pilot of a spy plane shot down over the USSR, and Soviet KGB colonel Rudolph Abel, who had served five years in the US on espionage charges. More than half a century later, Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, certainly knows the value of prisoner swaps. How to License a Design Patent

May 3, 2019 by www.inc.com

People think that you need a utility patent in order to license an invention. But that's not the case. Design patents have more value than they used to. Recently, I helped two orthodontists license a simple improvement in their field using a design patent. I've been told many times that design patents don't have a lot of value. However, if an invention must be shaped a certain way to work correctly -- which was true in their case -- a design patent may afford some protection on the overall appearance. (Particularly if a utility patent is still pending or unobtainable.) In this way, a design patent can still be a significant barrier to competitors. Dr. Christopher Cetta of St. Petersburg, Florida and his partner Dr. Richard Kaye from Moorestown, New Jersey specialize in straightening teeth and correcting bites. In an interview, Cetta described the origin of his dental invention the Precision Aligner Button . "Clear plastic aligners are being used in orthodontics … [Read more...] about How to License a Design Patent

Elon Musk cited this tool in his bot dispute with Twitter. Its creator has thoughts

August 9, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

New York (CNN Business) Kaicheng Yang, a researcher at Indiana University's Observatory on Social Media, received quite the surprise last week. Botometer , a tool he helped build to examine automated activity on Twitter, had been mentioned in court documents in the legal battle between Twitter and Elon Musk over their $44 billion acquisition deal . Musk, who originally said part of his plan for owning Twitter was to "defeat the spam bots," has more recently accused Twitter of lying about the number of bots on its platform, and has argued he should be able to walk away from the deal if Twitter won't provide the information necessarily to back up its publicly reported estimates. Twitter ( TWTR ) has sued Musk in an effort to compel him to complete the deal. Elon Musk's legal team has publicly filed its official response to Twitter's lawsuit Musk's answer to Twitter's lawsuit , which was made public Friday, states that the billionaire's team … [Read more...] about Elon Musk cited this tool in his bot dispute with Twitter.
