Explainer: Abortion, tech and surveillance

June 29, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

With abortion now or soon to be illegal in over a dozen US states and severely restricted in many more, Big Tech companies that vacuum up personal details of their users are facing new calls to limit that tracking and surveillance. One fear is that law enforcement or vigilantes could use those data troves against people seeking ways to end unwanted pregnancies. History has repeatedly demonstrated that whenever people’s personal data is tracked and stored, there’s always a risk that it could be misused or abused. With the Supreme Court's Friday overruling of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalised abortion, collected location data, text messages, search histories, emails and seemingly innocuous period and ovulation-tracking apps could be used to prosecute people who seek an abortion – or medical care for a miscarriage – as well as those who assist them. “In the digital age, this decision opens the door to law enforcement and private bounty hunters seeking vast amounts of … [Read more...] about Explainer: Abortion, tech and surveillance

Do pandas really exist? Over on TikTok, the jury’s out

June 29, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

Few animals are as beloved (and protected) as giant pandas. But while the species holds the status of “national treasure” in China, its very existence is currently being questioned on TikTok. Some users of the platform claim that pandas aren’t real. So what’s with this conspiracy theory that seems to fascinate the younger generation? Their cuddly, furry bodies, big eyes and clumsy walk make giant pandas particularly endearing. It’s no wonder the black and white bear has become a symbol of environmental protection, as well as the national symbol of China, the only country where the species still lives in the wild. While the species has not been considered endangered since 2016, some Internet users say it never was. They even go further, in fact, claiming that these mammals never existed in the first place, and are actually just men dressed up in panda suits or bears painted black and white. This conspiracy theory is particularly popular on TikTok, where the hashtag … [Read more...] about Do pandas really exist? Over on TikTok, the jury’s out

Do Ukraine And Roe V. Wade Mean The End Of Democracy?

June 25, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the striking images of recent current affairs is the leaders of France, Germany and Italy in a train compartment on their way to Kiev. Trains have played an important part in the history of European wars. For instance, armistices for the first and second world wars were signed in carriages and the professionalisation of the German army officer class in the lead up to the first world war was driven by the need to rationalise complicated train timetables (it’s a long story). Emmanuel Macron’s trip to Kiev offered him a much-needed chance to clarify his stance on the war, though his return to Paris was less happy as he subsequently lost his absolute majority in parliament. My sense is that the rise of the far left and right in France is less damaging in the near term for Macron – he will likely gain support from the right ‘Les Republicans’, to the long-term benefit of Edouard Philippe perhaps. What is more interesting in … [Read more...] about Do Ukraine And Roe V. Wade Mean The End Of Democracy?

Is Roe Vs Wade Just The Latest Blow To Democracy?

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The July 2022 issue of the respected Foreign Affairs journal contains an article that forecasts ‘America’s ‘Coming Age of Instability’ (by Steven Levitsky and Lucian Way). That the article posits America’s descent towards Hungarian/Russian style autocracy, something that would have been surprising ten years ago, but today is the norm, chillingly so. For example, in January 2022, the front cover of the Economist magazine that shows the Republican Party in the USA ‘walking away from democracy’ It is remarkable in the sense that journals like Foreign Affairs, and the broader foreign policy community in America have habitually encouraged the spread of democracy across the world and on occasion pronounced themselves worried about democracy in Europe. More troubling for the rest of the world, that the lodestar of modern democracy is beset by institutional decay and the withering of its democracy is a grave concern. Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

June 28, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Earlier this year, an Arizona woman whom we’ll call Kelly was completing the paperwork required to get facial feminization surgery. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her teens, and after years of struggling with depression, she decided as a 20-something to transition. Then reality hit fast: The process is expensive, lengthy, and rarely covered by insurance. “So I did what lots of trans people do,” she tells Fast Company . “I got a job at Starbucks.” advertisement advertisement Starbucks has covered some types of gender-reassignment surgery since 2012. But in a radical move in 2018, it worked with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to unveil a supplemental insurance plan that added coverage of procedures “previously considered cosmetic,” such as breast reduction, forehead contouring, calf implants, and hair transplants. With the requisite medical signoffs, Starbucks workers could get many of these procedures with zero … [Read more...] about Workers who joined Starbucks for transgender health benefits worry they are now at risk

‘Completely Wrong’: Fox News Contributor Shuts Down CNN Commentator’s Claim That The GOP Won’t Survive SCOTUS Ruling

June 28, 2022 by dailycaller.com

A Fox News contributor shut down a CNN commentator after the latter claimed it would “be hard to imagine the Republican Party surviving” following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. “I have known S.E. personally for more than a decade, I consider her a friend and I like her a lot,” Ben Domenich, co-Founder of the Federalist, said Monday night on “The Ingraham Angle” about S.E. Cupp’s profane rant that morning . “I disagree with her fundamentally on this and I think she is completely wrong.” (RELATED: CNN Sounds The Alarm On Another Voting Bloc Fleeing The Democratic Party) “It’s hard to imagine the Republican Party surviving this,” Cupp said. “Between anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, book banning, anti-democracy, I mean, as all of the regressive bullshit — garbage, sorry, to this — I don’t take that back — add it all together and I don’t know who is left in the future — in future generations to be drawn to this party.” Domenech told host Laura Ingraham that the … [Read more...] about ‘Completely Wrong’: Fox News Contributor Shuts Down CNN Commentator’s Claim That The GOP Won’t Survive SCOTUS Ruling

‘A Lot Cheaper To Get Rid Of Them’: Tucker Carlson Says Corporations Are Telling People They Can’t Have Children

June 29, 2022 by dailycaller.com

Fox News host and Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson said Tuesday that corporations are telling their employees that they can no longer have children. The host said large corporations are paying for abortions because paying for maternity leave and other family oriented services are a financial burden to them. These companies and media networks want the American middle class to “reset” their “unrealistic expectations” of raising a family, Carlson said. “Now they’re telling you that you cannot have the one thing that most people want more than anything else; the one thing that biological instinct drives all of us to want, and that’s children,” Carlson said. “The most reliable source of meaning and joy in human existence, a family, is now out of reach for the American middle class, and you should accept that is inevitable. In fact, you should embrace it.” The host played a clip of MSNBC host Katy Tur suggesting that having a baby takes a toll on a woman’s “body” and … [Read more...] about ‘A Lot Cheaper To Get Rid Of Them’: Tucker Carlson Says Corporations Are Telling People They Can’t Have Children

October 11, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The latest in the partisan struggle over President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Senate Democrats in a Sunday letter questioned the “reliability” of Amy Coney Barrett for omitting certain information from paperwork filed to the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of her confirmation process slated to start Monday. Key Facts In a letter sent to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy, tasked with the pre-confirmation vetting of Supreme Court nominees, all 10 Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee expressed concern about information that was initially missing or is still missing from Barrett’s Senate Judiciary Questionnaire (SJQ), a deep-dive into her resume, past work and approach as a justice.
