Indigo case: Airlines should sensitise staff to assist special needs flyers better

May 12, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

An IndiGo staffer called a distressed teen with disability a threat to other passengers. (Screengrab from video posted on Facebook by Manisha Gupta). It will not be long before the outrage dies down around the recent incident of private airlines IndiGo barring a specially-abled child from boarding a flight at the Ranchi airport, when things will go back to the usual, where most of us will continue to ignore and fail to acknowledge that everyday there are scores of people with disabilities who will continue to face indignity, humiliation and discrimination. The Ranchi incident, while shocking, is perhaps not far from the everyday reality that persons with disabilities (PwD) face every day in India. We must admit that we are not a country that supports the 26 million people living with either physical or learning disabilities. We have almost zero infrastructure that aids people with disabilities to help them face the stigma, discrimination and harassment that they tend to face on a … [Read more...] about Indigo case: Airlines should sensitise staff to assist special needs flyers better

How we can meet Biden’s 2030 climate goals with today’s technology

June 25, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Unprecedented forest fires in the drought-stricken western United States . Tropical storms and rising seas threatening the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Sizzling heat across large swaths of the country. As climate change unfolds before our eyes, what can the U.S. do to sharply and rapidly reduce its share of the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing it? advertisement advertisement The Biden administration has committed to reducing those emissions 50% by 2030 to below 2005 levels. That’s a critical first step of a global energy transition that must achieve net-zero emissions by midcentury to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) and thereby avert the worst impacts of climate change. Twenty years ago, I would have regarded the U.S. 2030 pledge as crazy talk. But a new study in the journal Science that I coauthored, compares results from six independent analyses conducted by academic, industry, and nongovernmental … [Read more...] about How we can meet Biden’s 2030 climate goals with today’s technology

Worker shortage is the biggest challenge

June 13, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

MALAYSIA is trying to reduce its dependency on low-skilled foreign workers as it moves up the economic value chain. To reduce the number of foreign low-skilled workers, both the businesses and industries across all the economic sectors are asked to hire more locals and embrace automation with the aim of becoming a high-income nation. And interestingly they have been doing so, where local employees have become the first choice. Still, businesses and industries across all the economic sectors need low-skilled foreigners to fill up the many jobs available where the locals are reluctant to take on. Most of the jobs taken up by the foreign workers are low entry levels considered to be dirty, dangerous, and difficult or 3D – reasons as to why the locals shy away. Also, the locals are seeking a more balanced lifestyle, better paying jobs like work in the gig economy or going abroad for the same low entry level jobs. Today, the labour shortage issues have worsened, now estimated … [Read more...] about Worker shortage is the biggest challenge

Oil And Banking Billionaire George Kaiser Says Market Bottom Is Still Far Off

June 24, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Oklahoma mogul spoke to Forbes about how he's protecting his investments ahead of the “near certainty” of a recession. With the S&P 500 entering a bear market last week , many of America’s billionaires are convinced that a recession is in the offing . George Kaiser , one of the wealthiest people in Oklahoma with an estimated $9.5 billion fortune, is one of them. Kaiser, 79, told Forbes that a “recession seems a near certainty” and that he expects the economy to tip into a downturn in the first two quarters of 2023, with a prolonged dip in the stock market. The timing of the market bottoming out—the point at which the stock market hits a low and begins rising again—is still far off, according to Kaiser. “Historic analogies would suggest a 35% total drop from the peak, but that history is largely irrelevant since so many of the factors are unique,” he said. Kaiser, who has appeared on the Forbes … [Read more...] about Oil And Banking Billionaire George Kaiser Says Market Bottom Is Still Far Off

June 24, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

In those first few fraught hours of February 24th, after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Anastasiia Smyk, CEO and co-founder of aviation software startup Input Soft , recalls being in a state of shock and incredulity. She was in Kyiv at the time, but her 11-strong team was scattered around the country. advertisement advertisement “The first week we were just thinking about how to survive at a human level,” says the 25-year-old entrepreneur. “So we decided to rent a house for our team in the Carpathian mountains, in the [safer] western part of Ukraine, and told them they could go there with their families to wait until we knew more about what was happening. Some of them went. Others were unable to get out.” One of those left behind was the startup’s accountant, whose home town of Kherson, in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since early March.
