Water drops are seen dripping from the Wolverine Glacier in the Kenai Mountains on September 06, 2019 near Primrose, Alaska. AFP FILE PHOTO LOS AGELES — Extreme weather in Alaska that has brought record high temperatures and torrential downpours has left authorities in the far northern US state warning of “Icemageddon”. Huge sheets of ice are blocking roads and choking traffic in Fairbanks, Alaska’s second largest city, reported the state’s transportation department, which has coined the neologism — a play on “Armageddon” — to describe the chilly impasse. “We’re experiencing an unprecedented series of winter storms,” the department tweeted. My Family and Other Globalizers | The Tao of the Jigsaw
In life, as in a puzzle, you sometimes feel that a piece is missing. It rarely is. (Representational image: Ross Sneddon via Unsplash) Note to readers: My Family and Other Globalizers is a weekly parenting column on bringing up global citizens. The COVID pandemic was a globally unique moment in how it altered our ways of working, but also parenting. School is to most parents, the equivalent of a fairy godmother who transforms the Cinderella-work of childcare into the princess-like luxury of time for oneself to work, or vacuum, or, gasp, even read a novel. For many parents around the world, the pandemic took away that fairy godmother and replaced her with the wicked stepmother of home-schooling. If someone had told me in the days before coronavirus became a standard part of our daily lexicon, that I would have to deal with my children 24x7, while simultaneously working from the same home that was also now occupied by my spouse and his constant Zoom-hum of conference … [Read more...] about My Family and Other Globalizers | The Tao of the Jigsaw
Daily Voice | With valuations no longer cheap, volatility could recur: Prateek Agrawal of ASK Investment Managers
Prateek Agrawal is the Business Head & CIO at ASK Investment Managers “Overall, I would stay focussed on earnings and valuations and policy making in India rather than what is happening elsewhere. This should be especially true because the influence of foreign capital on the Indian market is reducing," Prateek Agrawal - Business Head and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of ASK Investment Managers, told Moneycontrol in an interview. Large FPI selling has been readily absorbed by MFs, insurance, Pension and PF funds and this is a structural change that has taken place, he believes. Agrawal's preferred valuation methodology, at present, is to look at 5-year PE averages and earnings yield to bond yield indicators. "These indicators point to an index target of 18,250 to 18,500 over 2022. This leaves just about 7 percent upside from the present levels," says Agrawal, who has over 27 years of experience in capital markets, with long, distinguished stints in sell side research, … [Read more...] about Daily Voice | With valuations no longer cheap, volatility could recur: Prateek Agrawal of ASK Investment Managers
Advancing cautiously
Asia needs good relations with both the US and China "as they play differing but important roles", says Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, governor of Penang state. SUPPLIED Asian economies are bouncing back amid the so-called Great Reset triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. But a cautious mood prevails given the possible short-term risks of new waves of the virus, rising inflation and political instability. However, corruption remains one of the main challenges that Asian countries must address as they recover from the pandemic-hit downturn, experts say. Corruption is one of the three C's that pose challenges for the region. The other two are Capital -- given concerns that investment flows could decline -- and the Cost of living crisis as rising inflation affects countries globally, said Michael Yeoh, president of the Malaysian think tank KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific. "We've seen in many Asian countries, how corruption has affected economic growth and the need to enhance … [Read more...] about Advancing cautiously
Supreme Court Boechler Decision Cuts Some Slack In Tax Court Deadline
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Supreme Court does not muck around with Tax Court decisions very much. So Boechler, P.C v, Commissioner of Internal Revenue has a small but passionate group of people excited. It was a unanimous opinion delivered by Amy Coney Barrett. She managed to work in a hat tip to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, whom she clerked for and who was a pal of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose seat Barrett occupies. The decision is about the deadline for filing an appeal of the IRS decision in a Collection Due Process Hearing. What Is A Collection Due Process Hearing? If it has been determined that you owe money to the IRS and you don't just send them a check, you will at some point hear from the collection people. It starts with annoying mail. It may end there and if ten years goes by you are olly olly oxen free. If you are not so lucky you will at some point get some mail to the effect that they are filing a lien or intend to levy you … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Boechler Decision Cuts Some Slack In Tax Court Deadline
