Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Panama Canal is a conduit for 6% of the global maritime traffic. But climate change is disrupting that trade. While high temperatures and little rain are the primary causes, four hurricanes over seven years have been equally devastating. The Panama Canal is in the midst of Panama’s rainforests, which cover 68% of its land or nearly 12.7 million acres. Both depend on precipitation for survival. If the rainforests do not get ample rainfall, it trickles down to the canal. The bad news is that the canal’s authorities say that 2019 was the fifth most arid in 70 years, with rainfall 20% less than the average, all compounded by depleted reservoirs. Indeed, water levels fell in 2015 and 2016 , and shippers had to reduce the amount of cargo on their vessels — money down the drain. “The Panama Canal is the only interoceanic commerce route whose operation depends on the availability of freshwater, making it the most … [Read more...] about Climate Change Threatens Panama Canal And Global Maritime Trade

Disney Q3 FY 2022 Earnings Report Preview: What to Look For
Key Takeaways Analysts estimate adjusted EPS of 95 cents vs. 80 cents in Q3 FY 2021. Disney+ subscribers are expected to rise YOY, but at the slowest pace in at least seven quarters. Revenue is expected to grow at a solid rate, but to slow compared with the past several quarters. The Walt Disney Co. ( DIS ) business has recovered strongly in recent quarters as the company has emerged from the extreme impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its theme parks and live experiences. And while most of the company's parks have reopened, business growth is also being fueled by Disney's popular streaming platforms. Both Disney+ and Disney-owned Hulu have experienced sharp increases in subscriptions in recent quarters. But the prospect of ads being sold on the service and other business concerns for the streaming industry more broadly continue to loom. Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters
BIDEN DEEPLY UNPOPULAR WITH VOTERS… WSJ: Biden, Democrats Lose Ground on Key Issues, WSJ Poll Finds WASHINGTON—President Biden and his fellow Democrats have lost ground to Republicans on several of the issues most important to voters, a new Wall Street Journal poll finds, a troubling sign for the party seeking to extend its controlling majority of Congress for another two years. The new survey showed that 57% of voters remained unhappy with Mr. Biden’s job performance, despite favorable marks for the president’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a recent State of the Union speech, which provided him an opportunity to directly speak to millions of Americans. Just 42% said they approved of Mr. Biden’s performance in office, which was virtually unchanged from the previous Journal poll in mid-November. Meanwhile, Democratic advantages narrowed over Republicans on issues related to improving education and the Covid-19 response. A 16-percentage-point Democratic edge … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters
9 Reasons To Love Mauritius Now
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It seems that just about everyone was in Mauritius at some point—Arabians in the 10th century, followed by the Malays and then the Portuguese, who named it Ilha do Cerne (“Island of the Swan”) but didn’t stick around. The Dutch colonized it, until that failed and the French moved in and named it Isle de France. After a war, the British had a turn until the country became independent in 1968. And while it doesn’t have an easy past (the colonists imported and enslaved much of the population, then enticed Indians essentially as indentured servants), the result of all that history today is a fascinatingly multicultural island. Everything seems to be a blend of European, African, Asian and Creole influences. The island is also an exclusive one, says Ashwin Cahoolessur, an officer at the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. There are no low-cost flights, and some 50 of the island’s 101 hotels have five stars. He continues that … [Read more...] about 9 Reasons To Love Mauritius Now
Stocks stumble as caution reigns ahead of U.S. inflation data
Representative image Shares slipped and the dollar hung off recent highs on Tuesday as investors eyed U.S. inflation data due a day later that will likely yield clues to any further aggressive Federal Reserve rate hikes. The stakes are high for the July U.S. consumer prices report on Wednesday after an unexpectedly strong U.S. jobs data last week boosted expectations of a sharp interest rate increase to tackle soaring inflation. The broader Euro STOXX 600 fell 0.6%, after logging its best session in nearly two weeks on Monday, with German stocks down 0.7%. Miners and autos, among top gainers a day earlier, led declines on Tuesday. Wall Street futures pointed to slim gains. "The focus is on tomorrow's U.S. inflation numbers and whether or not they are likely to show any indication of a softening of inflationary pressures," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets. Close "Are we near the peak, and will tomorrow's CPI numbers reflect that?" … [Read more...] about Stocks stumble as caution reigns ahead of U.S. inflation data

Natural Gas Is The Flexibility Needed For More Wind And Solar
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Adding flexibility and reliability, more natural gas will be critical to more wind and solar power / ... [+] AFP PHOTO / - / China OUT (Photo credit should read -/AFP/Getty Images) "Shale & renewables: a symbiotic relationship," Citi, here I have already shown here and here how U.S. natural gas power plants continue to increase in efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the high flexibility of these plants will also be increasingly critical in the years ahead. That's because gas is the backup source for more wind and solar power, which are naturally intermittent and need gas peaking plants to compensate for when "the wind doesn't blow" and "the sun doesn't shine." Gas combined cycle plants have a quick "ramp up" ability in a matter of minutes to generate electricity for those unforeseen periods when the wind and/or solar option goes away. As headlined here by MIT Technology … [Read more...] about Natural Gas Is The Flexibility Needed For More Wind And Solar
Making Sense Of The Corporate Net Zero Commitment Maze
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While the pace of change might be too slow for some, there is no doubt that net-zero is more mainstream in the business world than it was, say a decade ago. According to Net Zero Tracker, almost two thirds (683) of the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world have now made corporate commitments. A recent white paper by the Finnish start-up Compensate – Getting the claims right – highlights many of the issues around net zero commitments. For example, it notes that some companies have set goals decades away, but have not set emission reduction targets over the next 10 years, or that some “routinely exaggerate or misreport” their progress towards their net zero targets. Compensate’s chief impact officer, Niklas Kaskeala, who has more than 15 years’ experience in sustainability and climate change, said over half of the biggest companies in the world now have some sort of climate change, carbon … [Read more...] about Making Sense Of The Corporate Net Zero Commitment Maze
Opinion: Putin’s prisoner swap calculus
Jill Dougherty is adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a former CNN Moscow Bureau Chief. The views expressed in this commentary are her own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Some of the most dramatic -- and diplomatically delicate -- moments in United States-Russia relations are linked to prisoner exchanges. Jill Dougherty February 10, 1962: In a Cold War, Hollywood-style trade on the Glienicke Bridge between Berlin and Potsdam, two men -- an American and a Soviet -- walked in opposite directions across what would decades later be known as the "Bridge of Spies." They were Francis Gary Powers, the American pilot of a spy plane shot down over the USSR, and Soviet KGB colonel Rudolph Abel, who had served five years in the US on espionage charges. More than half a century later, Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, certainly knows the value of prisoner swaps. In April, his administration freed former US Marine … [Read more...] about Opinion: Putin’s prisoner swap calculus
Elon Musk cited this tool in his bot dispute with Twitter. Its creator has thoughts
New York (CNN Business) Kaicheng Yang, a researcher at Indiana University's Observatory on Social Media, received quite the surprise last week. Botometer , a tool he helped build to examine automated activity on Twitter, had been mentioned in court documents in the legal battle between Twitter and Elon Musk over their $44 billion acquisition deal . Musk, who originally said part of his plan for owning Twitter was to "defeat the spam bots," has more recently accused Twitter of lying about the number of bots on its platform, and has argued he should be able to walk away from the deal if Twitter won't provide the information necessarily to back up its publicly reported estimates. Twitter ( TWTR ) has sued Musk in an effort to compel him to complete the deal. Elon Musk's legal team has publicly filed its official response to Twitter's lawsuit Musk's answer to Twitter's lawsuit , which was made public Friday, states that the billionaire's team … [Read more...] about Elon Musk cited this tool in his bot dispute with Twitter.
