JAKARTA (The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network): Indonesia's oldest party Golkar has formed a coalition with two smaller parties, in a move that analysts view as endorsing its party chief as a presidential candidate and opening up a chance of having more than two presidential hopefuls in the 2024 election unlike the last two polls. The alliance with National Mandate Party (PAN) and United Development Party (PPP), named "United Indonesia Coalition", seeks to "end the use of political identities polarising Indonesian voters" as seen in the 2014 and 2019 elections, which Golkar top executive Ace Hasan Syadzily described as "causing a deep trauma" within the society after the polls. "We want the general election to become a contest of ideas, thoughts, track records and achievements, an opportunity to prove to each other which one is the best," he said last Friday (May 13). The ratings of Golkar chief Airlangga Hartarto, 59, who is coordinating minister for economic affairs, have been … [Read more...] about Indonesia’s Golkar forms coalition to endorse chief as presidential candidate

CNN Ignores Dem Presidential Candidates Who Campaigned At Vegas Church Led By Pastor Who’s Called Homosexuality A Sin
Three 2020 presidential candidates stopped at a Las Vegas church led by a pastor who’s called homosexuality a sin. Media outlets have stayed largely silent on this, despite all three candidates being active in fighting for LGBTQ equality. CNN’s Don Lemon went after a pastor for his rhetoric following the pastor visiting the White House and speaking with President Donald Trump in late July. 2020 presidential candidates Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders have reportedly campaigned at a Las Vegas church led by a pastor who said being gay is “enough to send you to hell.” Media outlets such as CNN have largely ignored this while pouncing on a pastor for similar controversial remarks who President Donald Trump invited to the White House last week. Sens. Harris of California and Booker of New Jersey attended services over the weekend at Las Vegas’ Victory Missionary Baptist Church, which Rev. Robert E. Fowler Sr. leads. The pastor said in a 2013 radio interview … [Read more...] about CNN Ignores Dem Presidential Candidates Who Campaigned At Vegas Church Led By Pastor Who’s Called Homosexuality A Sin

Somali police announce curfew in capital during Sunday’s presidential vote
MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Police in Somalia have announced a 33-hour curfew on the capital Mogadishu that will keep almost all residents at home during a presidential election by lawmakers on Sunday, in which incumbent leader Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed is seeking a second term. Police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden announced at a press conference on Saturday a full curfew in the city, covering both traffic and people, from Saturday at 9:00 PM (1800 GMT) until Monday at 6:00 AM. Lawmakers, security personnel and all others officials involved in the vote are still free to move during those hours. The indirect election, in which lawmakers will pick a president, will take place in an airport hangar behind blast walls to help fend off potential Islamist attacks or meddling by factions within the security services. Mohamed is facing 37 opponents in the vote, including two former presidents, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who analysts see as the frontrunners. P33 wage hike in Metro Manila, P55-P110 in W. Visayas
MANILA, Philippines — The daily minimum wage in Metro Manila has been raised by P33, and by P55 to P110 in the Western Visayas region, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced on Saturday. Labor groups described the increase as a mere pittance, but small business establishments expected the wage hike to be as devastating as a “supertyphoon.” The National Capital Region (NCR) wage board on Friday set the minimum daily wage at P570, up from the current P537, Dole said. The Western Visayas Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board on Thursday raised the daily minimum wage of workers in private establishments with more than 10 employees to P450 daily from the current P395, according to Dole Regional Director Sixto Rodriguez Jr. Workers in establishments employing 10 and below will get a daily minimum wage of P420 from P310, while agricultural workers in the region will get a daily pay of P410 from P315. “Kasambahays,” or domestic workers, will now … [Read more...] about P33 wage hike in Metro Manila, P55-P110 in W. Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019
MANILA, Philippines — The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) dispelled doubts with the fast inflow of votes in the quick count of the 2022 national election results by reminding the public that transmission in the 2019 midterm polls was actually faster. PPCRV chairperson Myla Villanueva said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart on Monday that the big story in 2019 was the seven-hour glitch which delayed the partial quick count being done by the citizen’s arm. But this was actually even faster than the 2022 polls — data of which, she said, were opened to students and universities to ensure transparency and increase credibility who all agreed that there was nothing unusual. “To put it in perspective, maybe in 2019 the big story was the seven-hour glitch. But in reality data was coming in, we just weren’t seeing it in our servers while the other servers were seeing it. To be exact, the rate of the transmissions of 2019 were actually faster than … [Read more...] about Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019
Biden Claims Clear ‘Mandate For Action,’ Vows Post-Election Unity And Civility
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Joe Biden stopped short of declaring himself the outright winner of the 2020 presidential election in a speech Friday night, but predicted he would emerge with a clear mandate when the dust settles, calling for Americans to come together in the aftermath of a brutal campaign. Key Facts The Democratic presidential candidate said he doesn’t have a “final declaration of victory” as the outcomes in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada – and thus, the Electoral College – remain uncalled, but nonetheless he predicted he would “win this race with a clear majority of the nation behind us.” With 50.5% of the national popular vote to Trump’s 47.7%, Biden leads by nearly 4.2 million votes, according to the New York Times – a number set to grow as outstanding ballots in deep-blue California and New York are counted. “We’ve gotten over 74 million votes,” Biden exclaimed, noting that the total is already more … [Read more...] about Biden Claims Clear ‘Mandate For Action,’ Vows Post-Election Unity And Civility
Gov’t think tank warns against oil deregulation backslide
Calls for the revival of the price stabilization fund for oil have resurfaced in recent months as the successive and hefty fuel price hikes have put a dent in the budget of Filipino consumers, but a government think thank is urging policymakers to stay the course of reforms set in place in the late 1990s. A study released by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), however, said reinstating the Oil Price Stabilization Fund (OPSF) is not the solution to fuel price woes. During the campaign period, presidential candidates Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Manny Pacquiao proposed reinstating the OPSF should they win in this year’s election to shield the country from the impact of rising fuel costs, mainly driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Philippines is a net oil importer. Hence, global developments have a significant impact on pump prices locally. Adoracion Navarro, senior research fellow at the PIDS, said such a move would spell a reversal of the downstream oil … [Read more...] about Gov’t think tank warns against oil deregulation backslide
Global challenges for 2022
Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. A 21st century event as powerful as the inventions of letters, the wheel or steam engine — or as devastating as a world war — could be the breaking out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Its spread transformed the centuries-old practice of reporting to work into working from home. The international order is not free from the cataclysmic shift. As we move into the third year of the pandemic, let’s take a look at global challenges ahead. Most noticeable is the retreat of globalization and the shutting down of borders, which wreaked havoc on international exchanges and multinational enterprises. Globalization on the political, economic and cultural fronts suddenly came to a halt. The biggest victim of the pandemic was the tourism industry, which saw the number of global tourists drop to 381 million in 2020 from 1.46 billion in 2019. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates the resulting losses … [Read more...] about Global challenges for 2022
WILBON And WILLIAMS: Democrats Have Taken Black Women’s Vote For Granted. Will It Come Back To Bite Them?
In 2020, Joe Biden’s presidential bid was resurrected from life support by black women in South Carolina. The numbers bear us out; if the next Republican presidential candidate could garner 15% of the black female vote, it is game over for Democrats. The Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) and Essence magazine recently released a poll to gauge the pulse of black women in America. Brilliant Corners Strategies , a Left-leaning market research company, conducted the survey. However, even a poll commissioned and conducted by the Left for the Left could not hide the great displeasure that black women have with the Democratic party. Only 9% of black women believe they are getting ahead. 61% of black women Gen Xers and 68% of the black women from the Silent Generation say the economy is getting worse. Only 65% of the black women would vote for the Democrats in the midterms. At least 92% of black women voted for the Democratic candidate in 2018. Democrats know they cannot win the … [Read more...] about WILBON And WILLIAMS: Democrats Have Taken Black Women’s Vote For Granted. Will It Come Back To Bite Them?
