Hadi Matar, 24. stabbed author Salman Rushdie at a lecture in New York on August 12. The New Jersey man accused of stabbing Salman Rushdie told the New York Post in an interview published Wednesday that he was "surprised" the author had survived the attack. "When I heard he survived, I was surprised, I guess," Hadi Matar , 24, told the tabloid, which said they held a video interview with the jailed suspect. The suspected assailant, who has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges, did not say whether he was inspired by the 1989 edict, or fatwa, issued under Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, that ordered Muslims to kill the writer for what he deemed the blasphemous nature of the book " The Satanic Verses ." "I respect the ayatollah. I think he's a great person. That's as far as I will say about that," said Matar, who according to the Post was advised by his lawyer not to discuss the issue. Matar told the paper he had "read a couple … [Read more...] about Surprised Salman Rushdie survived, says his 24-year-old attacker Hadi Matar

Idris Elba on the ‘fascinating merger’ of drama and edge-of-your-seat action in ‘Beast’
Idris Elba in “Beast” —PHOTOS COURTESY OF UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL The last time we spoke to Idris Elba, we were on the bullet train, the Shinkansen, from Kyoto to Tokyo to talk about his 2017 reality show “Idris Elba: Fighter.” “I don’t make decisions to please the fans,” the actor told us, as he put aside the scripts of two films—the Stephen King flick “The Dark Tower” and “Thor: Ragnarok”—that he was studying during the two-hour and 20-minute trip. Last week, we saw Idris again, albeit in a virtual roundtable, to discuss his role in Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s terrifying new thriller “Beast,” about a lion that goes rogue after poachers kill its pride. The film, which will open in Philippine cinemas next week (Aug. 24), casts Idris as Nate Samuels, an American physician who takes his teenage daughters Meredith (Iyana Halley) and Nora (Leah Jeffries) to a game reserve in South Africa after his estranged wife succumbs to cancer. ‘Meeting Doomsday’ And ‘Calendar Bankruptcy’: How Leaders Are Battling Meeting Overload
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I t was the return of business travel that tipped Stephanie Dismore’s calendar over the edge. Earlier this year, as the HP senior executive juggled running to airport gates with a schedule still filled with pandemic-era Zoom calls, Dismore sat down with her assistant and did an audit of her meetings. Some were delegated. Meetings set up simply to share information were canceled, with a request sent for a slide deck. The rest were given a hard look and had to pass a test to stay on her calendar. “I tell my team ‘no objective, no attendance,’ ” says Dismore, HP’s managing director of North America. If there’s not a clear goal, she says, “I just decline the meeting. If it’s important, it’ll get back on my calendar with an objective at some point.” Not everyone has the authority—or the executive assistant—to go through that sort of exercise in calendar hygiene. But after more than two years of remote work-fueled meeting … [Read more...] about ‘Meeting Doomsday’ And ‘Calendar Bankruptcy’: How Leaders Are Battling Meeting Overload
Chris, Liam, And Luke Hemsworth Are Funding Research To Revive Extinct Wild Animal

Colossal Biosciences, a genetic engineering and de-extinction company started in 2021, and the University of Melbourne’s Thylacine Integrated Genetic Restoration Research Lab are leading the charge in the research, according to The Jerusalem Post. The brothers are part of a pool of investors hoping to revive the extinct thylacine, also known as a Tasmanian tiger or wolf, the outlet noted. The team behind the genetic engineering is manipulating the DNA of a teeny tiny creature called a dunnart — the Tasmanian tiger’s closest living relative — to become more like that of the thylacine, University of Melbourne’s lab lead Andrew Pask explained, according to the New York Post. “The removal of an apex predator, especially due to human eradication, has a devastating effect on our ecosystem and contributes to such issues such as the spread of … [Read more...] about Chris, Liam, And Luke Hemsworth Are Funding Research To Revive Extinct Wild Animal
Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals
Make that four weeks in a row of gains for the U.S. stock market, as the rally has become undeniable. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both climbed more than 3% last week, with the the Dow up 2.9%. The S&P 500 has now climbed 15% from its lows in mid-June, while the Nasdaq has clawed back 20% since then. That could technically be described as a new bull market for the index. A 20% retracement from a recent low fits the bill—or the bull—but there are a lot of opinions about that. But we can't deny the strength of the rally, especially when we dig into the charts. The average stock in the Nasdaq Composite index is up 34% from its lows. Remember, just a few months ago, we were talking about the average Nasdaq stock being down 50% from its highs. The pendulum has swung back in a big way. Across the market, the breadth thrust has been pretty impressive. And no, that's not a swimming stroke. The breath trust indicator is a technical indicator used to ascertain market momentum … [Read more...] about Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals
