- A + A NEW YORK (June 29): First Solar Inc has decided against building a new factory in the US, citing uncertainties regarding trade policy and tax incentives. The biggest US solar manufacturer is still planning a manufacturing facility in either Europe or India, and Chief Executive Officer Mark Widmar expects to make a final decision within 90 days. That would come after the company completes a third US plant early next year in Ohio and its first factory in India in the second half of 2023. The decision is a setback for US President Joe Biden’s efforts to boost domestic solar manufacturing. Solar installations have slowed this year amid a US Commerce Department trade investigation, raising the prospect of tariffs on panels imported from four Southeast Asian nations. While the White House announced this month a two-year moratorium on new tariffs and took steps to encourage American production, Widmar said the moves don’t address underlying issues that give … [Read more...] about First Solar rejects US site for new factory, eyes Europe or India instead

Cricket-India to take late call on Rohit’s inclusion after positive COVID test
(Reuters) - India's captain Rohit Sharma may miss their test match against England starting on Friday after he tested positive for COVID-19, but the team will take a late call on his inclusion after his next COVID test, head coach Rahul Dravid said on Wednesday. Sharma tested positive during a warm-up match in Leicester last week and the question of who leads the side in his absence has been left hanging, with vice-captain KL Rahul not in the squad due to an injury. India were 2-1 ahead in the series last September when the final test at Old Trafford was cancelled due to COVID-19 cases in their camp. The fifth test will be played in Edgbaston from Friday. "We'll keep monitoring him (Sharma). We've got close to 36 hours to go. He'll have a test later tonight and one tomorrow as well. It's up to the medical team to decide," Dravid told reporters. "We haven't had a chance to see him as he's in quarantine." Dravid did not say whether fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah would lead the … [Read more...] about Cricket-India to take late call on Rohit’s inclusion after positive COVID test

Taking Stock | Market ends lower in choppy session ahead of expiry, auto and PMI data
Stock Market Today: The Indian market ended lower after a volatile session on June 29, a day ahead of the monthly expiry with investors also nervous about monthly auto numbers and PMI data to be released later in the week. At close, the 30-pack Sensex lost 0.25 percent, or 134.31 points, to end the day at 53,027, while the broad-based Nifty ended lower by 32.95 points, or 0.21 percent, at 15,799. “Consumer confidence is declining rapidly due to the uncontrolled and constant rise in inflation as India had to bear the double whammy effect of a dampening global equity market and rising crude prices as major suppliers like Saudi are unable to boost the output in the short-term”, said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. The domestic market, however, was able to recover most of the losses due to a strong movement in index heavyweights, PSUs, metals and oil & gas stocks before squandering some of the gains at the end of the day due to a volatile global … [Read more...] about Taking Stock | Market ends lower in choppy session ahead of expiry, auto and PMI data

Do Ukraine And Roe V. Wade Mean The End Of Democracy?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the striking images of recent current affairs is the leaders of France, Germany and Italy in a train compartment on their way to Kiev. Trains have played an important part in the history of European wars. For instance, armistices for the first and second world wars were signed in carriages and the professionalisation of the German army officer class in the lead up to the first world war was driven by the need to rationalise complicated train timetables (it’s a long story). Emmanuel Macron’s trip to Kiev offered him a much-needed chance to clarify his stance on the war, though his return to Paris was less happy as he subsequently lost his absolute majority in parliament. My sense is that the rise of the far left and right in France is less damaging in the near term for Macron – he will likely gain support from the right ‘Les Republicans’, to the long-term benefit of Edouard Philippe perhaps. What is more interesting in … [Read more...] about Do Ukraine And Roe V. Wade Mean The End Of Democracy?
Is Roe Vs Wade Just The Latest Blow To Democracy?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The July 2022 issue of the respected Foreign Affairs journal contains an article that forecasts ‘America’s ‘Coming Age of Instability’ (by Steven Levitsky and Lucian Way). That the article posits America’s descent towards Hungarian/Russian style autocracy, something that would have been surprising ten years ago, but today is the norm, chillingly so. For example, in January 2022, the front cover of the Economist magazine that shows the Republican Party in the USA ‘walking away from democracy’ It is remarkable in the sense that journals like Foreign Affairs, and the broader foreign policy community in America have habitually encouraged the spread of democracy across the world and on occasion pronounced themselves worried about democracy in Europe. More troubling for the rest of the world, that the lodestar of modern democracy is beset by institutional decay and the withering of its democracy is a grave concern. It is … [Read more...] about Is Roe Vs Wade Just The Latest Blow To Democracy?
