Syria death toll tops 370,000 in 8 years of war — monitor
This picture taken in eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor shows explosions following shelling by the US-backed forces on the Islamic State group’s embattled holdout of Baghouz, on March 11, 2019. (Photo by BULENT KILIC / AFP) Beirut, Lebanon — Eight years of war in Syria have left more than 370,000 people dead including 112,000 civilians, a monitor said Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of sources across the country, said more than 21,000 children and 13,000 women were among the dead. The conflict flared after unprecedented anti-government protests in the southern city of Daraa on March 15, 2011. Demonstrations spread across Syria and were brutally suppressed by the regime, triggering a multi-front armed conflict that has drawn in foreign powers and militant groups. The Britain-based Observatory’s last casualty toll on the Syrian conflict, issued in September, stood at more than 360,000 dead. Over 125,000 Syrian government … [Read more...] about Syria death toll tops 370,000 in 8 years of war — monitor
How This Kombucha Entrepreneur Got $350,000 From Barbara Corcoran and Sara Blakely on ‘Shark Tank’
Even Mark Cuban gets out-sharked from time to time. On Sunday's episode of Shark Tank , Cuban was preparing an offer for entrepreneur Kate Field, whose at-home kombucha brewing kit has generated $3.2 million in lifetime sales, but before Cuban could speak up, Field accepted an investment from two other sharks. Barbara Corcoran and guest shark and Spanx founder Sara Blakely offered Field $350,000 in exchange for 10 percent of The Kombucha Shop, which Field instantly accepted. The $350,000 will be split between $200,000 of equity and a $150,000 line of credit. "Normally people at least give me a shot," Cuban said when asked why he waited to make Field an offer. The Kombucha Shop's at-home brewing kit sells for $45 and includes a reusable glass jar and all the ingredients necessary to make one-gallon batches of the fermented tea drink. Most kombucha beverages typically sell for between $3 and $5 per 16-ounce bottle. Field expects to generate between $1.6 million to … [Read more...] about How This Kombucha Entrepreneur Got $350,000 From Barbara Corcoran and Sara Blakely on ‘Shark Tank’
Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Even if Top Gun: Maverick ends up just below Elvis atop the domestic box office in its fifth weekend, it won’t be for a lack of trying. Paramount and Skydance’s $170 million action drama earned another $8.25 million on its fifth Friday, dropping 26% from last Friday for a new $499.472 million domestic cume. Tom Cruise’s legacy sequel is passing $500 million domestic by the end of this sentence. It’s looking like a $30.1 million fifth-weekend gross for the Joseph Kosinski-directed flick, which would be A) a drop of just 33% and B) the second or third-biggest fifth-weekend gross alongside Titanic ($30.1 million) and Avatar ($42 million). That brings its domestic cume to $521 million by Sunday night. Presuming a continued 53/47 domestic/overseas split and a thus-far solid opening weekend in South Korea, Top Gun: Maverick should end tomorrow night just over/under the $1 billion mark in global grosses. Among domestic … [Read more...] about Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
Malaysia set to replace India as tourist king of Thailand
As Thailand Pass prepares to meet its end come July 1, it looks as if Malaysia is in line to replace the kingdom’s current tourist king, India. Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said yesterday that once Thailand Pass is no more, a larger number of Malaysian tourists than Indians is expected to make their way to the ‘Land of Smiles.’ Indians have so far made up Thailand’s biggest tourist group this year, with 100,884 arriving between January 1 and May 24. But earlier this month, Malaysians flooded into Phuket . Daily AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket were fully booked. Other hotspots for Malaysian travellers were Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Samui, Phattalung, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Dannok, Had Yai, Betong, and Sungai Golok – the final three on or near the northern Malaysian border. The Tourism Authority of Thailand says 78,523 Malaysian visitors entered the kingdom in the first 5 months of the year. But the Minister failed to take into … [Read more...] about Malaysia set to replace India as tourist king of Thailand

Singapore regulator praises leaders of crypto firms like Binance
- A + A (June 25): Just days after saying Singapore is “brutal and unrelentingly hard” on bad behaviour in the crypto industry, Sopnendu Mohanty, the chief fintech officer of the city’s regulator, struck a cordial tone. Mohanty, in a LinkedIn post summarising his thoughts from the Point Zero Forum in Switzerland, commended the leadership of some of the biggest firms in the sector. “Leaders from the crypto/token space (Binance, Crypto.com, Ripple and others) are fully committed to building a secure and sustainable innovation solving real problems, and identifying real-economy opportunities,” said Mohanty of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). “It is heartening to see the clarity among chief executive officers (CEOs) on the need to create a responsible and compliant industry. The future is on the right path.” Mohanty’s praise comes as the digital currency market continues to spiral downwards following a broad-based sell-off in digital assets and the collapse … [Read more...] about Singapore regulator praises leaders of crypto firms like Binance
Ukrainian city falls to Russia in one of war’s bloodiest fights
Ukrainian service members walk in the industrial area of the city of Sievierodonetsk, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues, Ukraine June 20, 2022. (REUTERS/Oleksandr Ratushniak/File Photo) KYIV/POKROVSK, Ukraine — Russian forces have fully occupied Sievierodonetsk, the mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city said on Saturday, confirming Kyiv’s biggest battlefield setback for more than a month, after weeks of some of the war’s bloodiest fighting. Ukraine called its retreat from the city a “tactical withdrawal” to fight from higher ground in Lysychansk on the opposite bank of the Siverskyi Donets river. Pro-Russian separatists said Moscow’s forces were now attacking Lysychansk. The fall of Sievierodonetsk — once home to more than 100,000 people, now a wasteland — was Russia’s biggest victory since capturing the port of Mariupol last month. It transforms the battlefield in the east after weeks in which Moscow’s huge advantage in firepower had yielded only slow gains. Russia will … [Read more...] about Ukrainian city falls to Russia in one of war’s bloodiest fights
No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
PETALING JAYA: You buy a bottle of your favourite fruit juice, slurp it down and then throw it into the nearest bin. The whole process may just take 10 minutes – but that glass bottle could be here for 1,000,000 more years. Glass is not being recycled, at least not in a major way. ALSO READ: No market for recycled glass bottles Most recyclers are business-driven and only focus on materials that give them the most returns, like plastic and paper. Environment and waste management specialist Dr Theng Lee Chong said the reason plastic is favoured over glass is because it can fetch a better price in terms of reselling and production cost. “Other factors that turn recyclers off from glass are that it takes up more space, weighs more and is harder to handle in terms of transportation and logistics. “Not all types of glass can be recycled. Bulbs, sheet glass, windshields and car accessories as well as windows cannot be recycled because some may contain hazardous material like … [Read more...] about No money to be made in recycling glass in this age of plastic
