(CTN NEWS) – On Wednesday, Relativity Space launched the world’s first 3D-printed rocket ‘Terren 1’ into space. The Terran 1 rocket is designed to transport light satellites into orbit, but it experienced an engine problem after launch and failed to reach its destination. The rocket was powered by super-cold methane and oxygen and appeared bright blue-green against the evening sky. After the first stage detached, the engine meant to propel it failed to ignite, leaving the rocket without enough power to reach orbit. The mission, nicknamed “Good Luck, Have Fun,” carried a prototype and a commemorative metal object printed by Relativity’s 3D printer. They did not have a client satellite on board. The launch was delayed twice before due to issues including cold propellant, bad weather, and insufficient fuel pressure. How A TikTok Ban Would Deal A Blow To Creators, Businesses And The American Economy
A U.S. ban on the world’s most popular social media app would affect far more American businesses and people than just the 150 million using the platform here. C asey Evertsen drove down a suburban Utah street lined with trash bins, speaking into his phone’s camera as he gave a tour of the brightly-colored truck he uses for his garbage can-cleaning business. “If you like seeing dirty stuff get cleaned and watching how cool stuff works, follow along,” he said in the video shared on TikTok. “Let’s clean some bins!” Evertsen’s service, Bin Blasters , had for a whole year struggled to get traction through Facebook and Instagram. So taking a cue from his teenage daughter, he decided to try promoting it on TikTok instead. On his eighth video, just one month in, Evertsen “blew up.” "I went out and just started cleaning bins that day, started on our route, and I look at my phone like an hour later, and there's 17,000 views,” he recalled. “Then it just got in the millions.” … [Read more...] about How A TikTok Ban Would Deal A Blow To Creators, Businesses And The American Economy
How IBM responded to the Snowden revelations with ‘good power’
I’d only been CEO of IBM for a year and a half when something happens that would change the nature of the global tech industry. In June 2013, an intelligence contractor named Edward Snowden leaks classified government documents to the Washington Post and the Guardian newspapers. The documents state that the U.S. government has been collecting data from several tech companies to track people potentially connected to terrorism. The surveillance program, called PRISM, conducts broad sweeps of internet traffic, making it possible for the private communications of American citizens to be collected and possibly viewed without a court order, amounting to warrantless surveillance. When I first hear the news about PRISM, I’m surprised but not worried. IBM has no connection to it, and we aren’t among the companies named in the leaked documents. This isn’t my problem, I think. Then the phone starts ringing. Foreign governments are calling. They’re asking about their data on … [Read more...] about How IBM responded to the Snowden revelations with ‘good power’
There’s No Evidence Fracking Poisoned Drinking Water In Town Featured In ‘Gasland’ Films
A new report by state regulators found hydraulic fracturing likely did not cause problems with drinking water in Pavillion, Wy. The multi-year investigation by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) found the “Evidence does not indicate that hydraulic fracturing fluids have risen to shallow depths utilized by water-supply wells.” “Also, based on an evaluation of hydraulic fracturing history, and methods used in the Pavillion Gas Field, it is unlikely that hydraulic fracturing has caused any impacts to the water-supply wells,” WDEQ investigators reported Thursday. Complaints of a bad taste and odor in the water by Pavillion residents has been used by environmentalists as evidence fracking posed a danger to drinking water across the country. Fracking involves injecting water, sand and some chemicals deep underground to break open shale to extract oil and natural gas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state regulators began investigating Pavillion’s … [Read more...] about There’s No Evidence Fracking Poisoned Drinking Water In Town Featured In ‘Gasland’ Films
Biden’s Approval Rating Falls Again Amid Concerns About Economy, Poll Finds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline President Joe Biden’s approval rating fell to 38% in March after hovering above 40% over the past few months, according to an AP-NORC poll, as Americans remained concerned about the president’s handling of the economy amid concerns about the financial health of the banking sector. Key Facts According to the poll, Biden’s approval rating as of March is just two points above his lowest approval rating of 36%, which was reported in July last year amid surging inflation and steep fuel prices. His latest rating is down markedly from 45% in February. People’s approval of his handling of the economy stands at only 31%—significantly lower than his overall approval rating. [Meanwhile] ‘No work, no pay’ for lawmakers, too (KOR)
SOHN HAE-YONG The author is the economic news editor of the JoongAng Ilbo. Korean lawmakers get some of the best treatments in the world. Last year, each member of the National Assembly was paid 154.26 million won ($117,900) before taxes, including salary and activity allowance. In terms of per capita GDP, Japan and Italy are the only countries that give higher salaries to lawmakers than their Korean counterparts. On top of that, lawmakers are provided with extra expenses, including business expenses, gasoline subsidies and trip expenses. Each lawmaker has nine aids. All together, one lawmaker costs 756 million won a year. The money is deposited into the account of lawmakers every month even if they do not engage in parliamentary activities. It is entirely paid by taxpayers’ money. Though lawmakers are paid a salary equivalent to the labor cost of a good medium-sized business, their productivity is very low. The approval rate of bills proposed in the 21st National Assembly is … [Read more...] about [Meanwhile] ‘No work, no pay’ for lawmakers, too (KOR)

As expected, Monetary Board raises key policy rate to 6.25%
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. (File photo / Philippine Daily Inquirer) MANILA -As expected, the Monetary Board (MB) raised the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) key policy rate by 0.25 percentage point (ppt) or 25 basis points to 6.25 percent effective on March 24 as inflation remained high in February. Also, the interest rate on the overnight deposit was raised by as much to 5.75 percent as was the rate on overnight lending to 6.75 percent. Asked whether this was the last hike in the current monetary policy tightening cycle, MB chair and BSP Governor Felipe Medalla said in a press briefing decisions in upcoming meetings will depend on data that would come in. “It would really depend on our assessment of the inflation picture in the Philippines,” Medalla said. ETHAN PECK: BlackRock’s Larry Fink Quietly Peddles The Left’s Radical ESG Agenda
In another one of his annual letters — this time to investors instead of CEOs — BlackRock CEO and self-appointed oligarch of the world economy, Larry Fink, proved once again that he can’t help but contradict himself, lie to shareholders, mischaracterize basic concepts and policies and favor his personal policy preferences over his fiduciary duty to shareholders. In his letter to CEOs last year, Fink obtusely defended BlackRock’s peddling of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and “stakeholder capitalism” — which is done with other people’s money — by claiming it “is not about politics. It is not a social or ideological agenda. It is not ‘woke.’” Much of this year’s letter was in the same vein — as Fink has a knack for passing off BlackRock’s radically left-wing agenda as apolitical, objective stewardship – though this time, he slightly subdued and reframed his message (and perhaps target audience), despite keeping BlackRock’s policies exactly the same. Fox example, … [Read more...] about ETHAN PECK: BlackRock’s Larry Fink Quietly Peddles The Left’s Radical ESG Agenda
