Is remote work here to stay? An inside look at how this shift could dramatically change cities

June 23, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

If companies allowed more of their employees to work from home permanently, businesses would gravitate toward city centers, while people would primarily live in the periphery, resulting in less traffic congestion and falling real estate prices downtown. advertisement advertisement Those are our main findings from a model we created to forecast pandemic-driven changes in Los Angeles. Many of these changes were beginning to happen back in the spring of 2020, when we began this research. We wanted to build a model that could show the effects of more widespread telecommuting over a long period of time post-pandemic. Our model is like an artificial world— think Sim City —in which virtual people choose where to live and where to work. Virtual companies provide jobs to workers, while virtual real estate developers provide offices, warehouses, and housing, setting prices that match supply with demand. Using pre-pandemic information about where people … [Read more...] about Is remote work here to stay? An inside look at how this shift could dramatically change cities

Justin Casterline/Getty Images/AFP The Women’s National Basketball Association issued a strongly worded statement Friday, condemning the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn federal abortion rights. In a 5-3-1 decision, the court declared the 1972 Roe v. Wade decision that granted women the right to choose unconstitutional and put abortion laws in the hands of the states. “This decision shows a branch of government that is so out of touch with the country and any sense of human dignity” the WNBA statement began. It went on to encourage Americans to vote. “We must recognize that when we cast a ballot it is to elect officials and to connect the dots to policies and legislation that align with our values.” The WNBA firmly believes people have the right to make their own personal decisions … [Read more...] about WNBA, athletes blast Supreme Court’s abortion ruling

How This Mattress Startup Made $20 Million in 10 Months

April 22, 2015 by www.inc.com

Editor's note: Casper is one of Inc.'s 2015 30 Under 30 . This year's readers' choice winner is ThinkLite . How would you describe the act of buying a mattress at a store? T. Luke Sherwin, co-founder and creative director of e-commerce mattress startup Casper, calls it "millions of square feet dedicated to a false premise." More specifically: "That if you try a bed for two minutes while you're awake, you'll find the best long-term mattress for you." He's omitting other potential drawbacks, such as feeling swamped by a vast array of products and prices, and worrying about logistics of delivery, setup, and returns. Casper's business model is all about alleviating these pain points. For example, Casper sells only a single brand--its own--in six different sizes, ranging in price from $500 to $950. Casper designs and makes the mattresses itself, with final assembly taking place in a plant outside Atlanta. And the company sells directly to consumers through its … [Read more...] about How This Mattress Startup Made $20 Million in 10 Months

The Supreme Court Just Struck Down Roe v. Wade. Female Founders Responded With Their Dissent

June 24, 2022 by www.inc.com

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to an abortion in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision. This decision marks the end of 49 years of legal precedent for abortion access, which began with the Roe v. Wade decision, passed in 1973. After the court released its response Friday morning--which has been anticipated for weeks--entrepreneurs responded by voicing their own dissent. Some founders have shared how they will continue to support their employee's access to an abortion, in spite of SCOTUS's decision. "In light of today's devastating Supreme Court decision surrounding Roe v. Wade, it's clear that the responsibility to uphold women's reproductive rights in this country falls increasingly on the private sector," says Alina Vandenberghe, co-founder and co-CEO of the remote, New York City-headquartered software company, Chili Piper , which has employees worldwide. Chili Piper has instituted a policy that will pay for … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court Just Struck Down Roe v. Wade. Female Founders Responded With Their Dissent

As States Ramp Up Abortion Restrictions, Companies Respond With Workarounds for Employees

April 12, 2022 by www.inc.com

The state of Texas has one of the biggest economies in the U.S. and a growing population. But there's a new issue to consider for companies doing business in the Lone Star State: It holds one of the nation's most restrictive reproductive rights laws , which can be tricky to navigate for companies with female employees. It's now one of many. Since Texas became the first in the union to pass a statewide ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy in September of 2021, more states have followed suit. In March this year, Florida lawmakers banned abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, and Idaho approved a law based on the model in Texas that will halt abortions after six weeks of pregnancy starting in September. Then this week, Oklahoma's Republican governor, Kevin Stitt, signed a bill into law that makes performing an abortion illegal in the state, with an exception only in the case of a medical emergency. Twenty-two states currently have some form of abortion restrictions on … [Read more...] about As States Ramp Up Abortion Restrictions, Companies Respond With Workarounds for Employees

Woman found $36,000 stuffed in free couch and gave the money right back

June 5, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

The sellers of the couch rewarded the woman with $2,000 -- enough for her to buy a fridge for her home. (Representational image) A California woman found $36,000 stuffed in the cushions of a free couch she snagged on Craigslist -- and gave the money right back. Vicky Umodu needed to furnish her new home cheaply and could not believe her luck when she found a sofa set being given away. "I just moved in, and I don't have anything in my house," she told ABC7 from her home in Colton, near Los Angeles this week. "I was so excited, so we picked it up and brought it in." But it turned out there was a whole lot more to the giveaway than met the eye. Close The lump she found inside one of the cushions turned out to be several envelopes filled with cash -- thousands of dollars' worth. "I was just telling my son, come, come, come! I was screaming, this is money! I need to call the guy." Umodu called the people who had given her the couch, told them of the … [Read more...] about Woman found $36,000 stuffed in free couch and gave the money right back
