It’s okay if you’re still confused about Coinbase. Let us explain why it matters now

Did we lose you already? Read on. advertisement advertisement What exactly does a cryptocurrency exchange do? It’s where you go to buy, sell, or store cryptocurrencies. Coinbase trades bitcoin and 50 other cryptocurrencies that you’ve never heard of, and it also does a lot of explaining to customers about crypto markets and the ins and outs of what’s happening with them. Why is it finally time to care about crypto markets? Remember the 1990s when newfangled web companies such as Netscape went public, and everyone breathlessly watched for confirmation that a company with no physical product was worth greenbacks? Same concept here. Coinbase is the first major cryptocurrency company to go public and therefore a test of whether it’s real or not. … [Read more...] about It’s okay if you’re still confused about Coinbase. These new poverty maps could reshape how we deliver international aid

· April 16, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Adding to an already overwhelming global poverty crisis, the pandemic increased the need for humanitarian aid distribution. In December, the UN appealed for $35 billion to be allotted to the 160 million in need around the world. With limited resources, and some countries cutting assistance, it’s important that the very poorest receive funds first. But need is incredibly hard to assess and usually relies on a combination of survey data that’s only sporadically collected, along with a rather limited well of geospatial data. The targeting that results is often indefinite and overly broad. advertisement advertisement Improving that pinpointing is the goal of a collaboration between UC Berkeley’s Center for Effective Global Action and Facebook’s Data for Good, the tech giant’s policy branch. The joint effort is producing extremely granular “micro-estimates” of socioeconomic status, down to … [Read more...] about These new poverty maps could reshape how we deliver international aid

Want more donations on Patreon? Cornell University researchers have some marketing advice

· April 16, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement The American Marketing Association’s Journal of Marketing is usually a disheartening rag, where experts publish their findings on how to further manipulate humanity via ads. But this month’s “prosocial giving” section includes an antidote, with a large-scale study exploring the behavior of donors to a major nonprofit. advertisement Researchers from Cornell University and the University of Hawaii parsed donor data from a large, animal-related organization with over 100,000 donors. Their findings are incredibly useful for anyone pursuing donors or Patreon contributions: Giving is gendered. Members, who donate at least partially in order to enjoy some benefit provided with membership, are much more likely to be men. Donors, who give simply because it feels good, are more likely to be women. Solicitations don’t increase amount given. It doesn’t matter how many letters and emails are sent; … [Read more...] about Want more donations on Patreon? Cornell University researchers have some marketing advice
