The report by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, issued on May 31, lays out in detail allegations that Cornelius was aggressively interrogated without access to a lawyer, was induced to sign a document in Arabic which he could not read and was held in solitary confinement for several months. In addition, during the trial that led to his initial conviction in April 2011, he reportedly had no access to an interpreter and the lawyer appointed for him did not speak English. The Working Group said the UAE government had not responded to its questions on the case.
