Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Joe Ingles, who had an uncertain start to his Milwaukee Bucks’ career, is beginning to repay the franchise for their trust and belief in him. Like his NBA career, his Bucks’ tenure began in a cloud of ambiguity. He signed a one-year, $6.5 million deal last summer, using the team’s entire taxpayer midlevel exception—the only tool they had available to bring in new talent (besides veteran minimum contracts). That was unusual because he was coming off a torn ACL he had suffered just five months earlier and neither party knew when he could return to the court. As the season got closer, it was evident Ingles’ recovery was progressing on a positive timeline—a massive relief for everyone involved. ACL recoveries can be tricky and sometimes linger longer than anyone would like. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case in this scenario. Ingles made his Bucks’ debut on December 19th after missing the team’s first 29 games. It was a … [Read more...] about Milwaukee Bucks Patience With Joe Ingles Is Paying Off

Unified WESM to boost Luzon energy buffer
MANILA, Philippines – Electricity supply risks as indicated by “yellow” alerts in the Luzon grid could ease once the unified Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) starts operating this month, an official of the Department of Energy (DOE) said. Yellow alerts are raised when energy reserves fall below ideal levels, although such alerts do not necessarily lead to power outages. Energy Undersecretary Rowena Guevara told reporters that the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP), which will link the country’s three main island groups to create one grid, would be online by March 31. “The commercial operation of WESM Mindanao and the MVIP is expected to improve the reliability of electric power supply not only in the Mindanao grid but also in the Luzon and Visayas grids,” Guevera said. The P56-billion major project of the electricity superhighway run by National Grid Corp. of the Philippines will enable Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to share energy sources across the network … [Read more...] about Unified WESM to boost Luzon energy buffer
The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Both REITs admit climate risk is a material risk factor in their 10Ks. Coastal Risk, a consulting firm, and I tried estimating such risk using publicly available data. We made some progress but could not go too far. We need rules on quantitative climate risk disclosures that would help investors bound such risks, contrary to claims that our current voluntary disclosure regime is adequate. Climate risk disclosures are arguably the most controversial development in the staid world of accounting and reporting in recent times. As a case study, consider the SEC’s proposed climate risk disclosure rule which is reported to have attracted over 14,000 comment letters. The proponents of more and useful disclosure (including me) argue that climate-induced physical and transition risks are real for many businesses, but the current state of required disclosure does not give investors enough information to get a reasonable handle on … [Read more...] about The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE

Asia shares hope for best as Fed decides on rates
A woman walks past a screen displaying the Hang Seng Index at Central district, in Hong Kong, China March 21, 2023. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu SYDNEY – Asian shares staged a cautious bounce on Wednesday with hopes a global banking crisis would be averted vying with uncertainty over the outlook for U.S. interest rates as the Federal Reserve holds a high-stakes meeting on policy. Efforts by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to calm nerves seemed to be working with bank shares rallying overnight. Government officials were also pondering increasing the limit on deposit insurance, though there was no agreement on this as yet. Strains were still evident among regional U.S. banks with shares of First Republic Bank sliding on suggestions the government might be involved in a rescue deal, perhaps disadvantaging shareholders. The unease left both S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures barely changed. EUROSTOXX 50 futures edged up 0.2 percent, while FTSE futures rose 0.1 percent. It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Denver Nuggets caught a lot of flack for losing four straight games to mediocre opponents a few weeks ago, with the discussion inevitably getting intertwined with the MVP candidacy of Nikola Jokić. What seems to be forgotten, however, was the fact that the Nuggets were just coming off eight wins in nine games, as well as the fact that the team isn't exactly in dire need of going all-out this late in the season. In fact, championship contenders - an umbrella the Nuggets fall in under - need to at some point cut corners for the sake of durability. The NBA Playoffs aren't over in mere days. It's a two-month competitive extravaganza where players often shut off communication with much of the outside world, and are rarely available for anything but traveling, practices, games, and mandatory media sessions. Asking teams - especially those that are locks to get into the postseason - to go hard in the late stages of the … [Read more...] about It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
Chip plants in China won’t be forced to shut if firms receive US funding, says S.Korea
Semiconductor chips are seen on a printed circuit board in this illustration picture taken Feb 17, 2023. REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File photo SEOUL – South Korea’s trade ministry said on Wednesday that the United States’ proposed rules to prevent $52 billion in chip funding from being used by “countries of concern” will not force recipients to shut down their China factories. The U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday proposed limits for recipients of U.S. chip manufacturing and research funding, including limits on investing in expansion in countries such as China and Russia. The world’s largest and second-largest memory-chip makers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have chip production facilities in China. Samsung is building a chip plant in Texas that could cost more than $25 billion, while SK Hynix parent SK Group announced last year plans to invest $15 billion in the U.S. chip industry. Both may apply for funding. The proposed rules for funding recipients limit … [Read more...] about Chip plants in China won’t be forced to shut if firms receive US funding, says S.Korea
The Future Of Work, Office Buildings And American Downtowns
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Remy Raisner is the Founder & CEO of The Raisner Group , a Brooklyn-focused Real Estate Private Equity company. In New York at the end of January 2023 , 52% of Manhattan office workers were in the office on an average weekday. This is a jaw-droppingly low number for the most vibrant city in the world, pretty much three full years after the start of the pandemic. About 10% of the local workforce is fully remote, and only 9% of employees are in the office five days a week. The return-to-office trend seems to have plateaued as the fast acceleration of returns did not occur. The “new normal” seems to hover around 55%-60% office occupancy. Nevertheless, many employers expanded their Manhattan head count since March 2020 (40%). Many fewer expect to decrease it. In addition, 26% of firms surveyed expect to increase their real estate footprint in the next five years. Tech companies have the least in-office … [Read more...] about The Future Of Work, Office Buildings And American Downtowns
Leading Disney Ride Manufacturer Puts Itself Up For Sale
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The manufacturer of the ride systems which power many of Disney's most beloved theme park attractions has been put up for sale after over-spending in a bid to build the world's most cutting-edge roller coaster. Unbeknownst to many guests, theme park giants like Disney and Universal Studios don't tend to build their own attractions. Instead they rely on specialist engineering firms to make rides to their specification or they buy off-the-shelf systems so that their designers can give them a magic touch. This trend dates back to the early days of the theme park industry when Walt Disney himself bought six ride mechanisms from California-based manufacturer Arrow Development so that they could be part of the opening day line-up for Disneyland in 1955. Arrow made rides for small-scale amusement parks but they were given a sparkle by Disney's design wizards who are known as Imagineers due to their expertise in imaginative … [Read more...] about Leading Disney Ride Manufacturer Puts Itself Up For Sale
