San Diego kicked off its 250th anniversary Thursday at the downtown waterfront with the usual speeches, entertainment and light refreshments.But the year-long birthday party is proving to be like no other since 1769. There was no birthday cake or marching band.Instead, organizers focused attention on the Kumeyaay, who have lived in the region for at least 12,000 years and came to the aid of the first Spanish colonists only to be persecuted for decades thereafter.
