Make Your Own Bank Run On These Blue-Chip Yields
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is it time for us contrarians to “buy the dip” in bank stocks? We’re drowning in big bank-scare headlines. Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB VB ) knuckled under in days, Signature Bank (SBNY) wasn’t too far behind, and across the pond, Credit Suisse (CS) needed a buyout bailout from rival UBS (UBS) . Between The Lines, Kahn And Salihamidzic Warn Tuchel: Play Nice With Bayern’s Stars
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thomas Tuchel has been living in Munich for weeks. He has been spotted walking his dog in Bogenhausen, a leafy, affluent neighborhood on the Isar river. His two young daughters and ex-wife live in Munich. But now, Tuchel has truly arrived in Munich . In Bavaria’s temple of elite football, the shiny Allianz Arena. Smiling on the press podium, sat between Bayern board members Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn, Tuchel explained why he joined Bayern: “On a personal level, it is great for me to work in Bavaria, the state where I was born, and to live close to where my children and my family live.” Besides that, it was all business from Tuchel. “The DNA of the club is a responsibility. It is clearly defined. The responsibility is to win,” he said, with Kahn and Salihamidzic looking pleased on either side of their new signing. But there is another, more important responsibility at Bayern. One not uttered by … [Read more...] about Between The Lines, Kahn And Salihamidzic Warn Tuchel: Play Nice With Bayern’s Stars
Father/son coaching tandem Dick, Scott Hormann focus on fundamentals with rising Lutheran baseball
Dick Hormann played baseball in Japan, so naturally he wants his Lutheran Lions to approach the game like the Samurai. Dick, 86, is Lutheran’s assistant coach under his son, Scott Hormann. Dick’s in his 57th year coaching across four states, but before that, he was a third baseman on an Army team from 1958-62 at Camp Zama — a post just outside Tokyo. Stationed there as part of the United States’ plan to re-establish rapport with Japan following World War II, Dick’s Army team played the minor league teams associated with Nippon Professional Baseball franchises as well as company teams. If he could, Dick would time-travel his Lions back to those days in Japan, just to show them “the team we need to be.” “Today, kids come up and they see the fence and think it’s all about hitting it over the wall,” Dick said. “But they’ve got to understand the game — and the fact that so far, we’re not getting beat by other teams, we’re getting beat by the game. Look at the Japanese, they are all … [Read more...] about Father/son coaching tandem Dick, Scott Hormann focus on fundamentals with rising Lutheran baseball
The Greatest Show on Earth gets a second chance
When the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus—back after a six-year absence—begins its 50-city tour of North America this September, it will include 75 highly trained performers and a litany of extravagant acts. Tightrope walkers will flit across a triangular rope, 30 feet in the air. Acrobats will launch themselves between four spinning wheels suspended from stadium ceilings. BMX bikers will spring off a giant trampoline. And a 360-degree set studded with massive video screens and enhanced with sonic spatial technology will envelop audiences in the spectacle. There won’t, however, be any lions, tigers, or bears. Oh my! “When you have a brand called ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’ you can’t downscale,” says Juliette Feld Grossman, chief operating officer at Feld Entertainment, which acquired the iconic circus in 1984. “You really have to reimagine and reinvent.” Founded in 1871, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus delighted American families … [Read more...] about The Greatest Show on Earth gets a second chance
US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022. However, the relatively limited size of the planned repurchases in proportion to global oil demand makes assessing the impact on U.S. crude oil markets somewhat difficult—especially amid current global economic trends and geopolitical challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week it may take years for the government to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It's a reversal of plans the government announced last year to repurchase oil it sold from the reserve at lower prices. Current global economic concerns and geopolitical conditions, however, present challenges in assessing the market impact of the decision. Granholm told a House panel Thursday that the U.S. likely would not … [Read more...] about US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Coinbase: From Hot IPO To Cold Wells Notice
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Coinbase COIN (NYSE: COIN) began its publicly traded existence on April 14th, 2021 as a hot initial public offering that cryptocurrency freaks could not stop talking about. There was more than the usual amount of “this one’s going to the moon!” free and sometimes paid-for advice that typifies a certain type of IPO no matter what the era or the industry. The certainty of success seemed obvious to the many who participated. When the stock was issued at a price of $250 — which got filled, by the way, by few investors — an immediate at-the-open rally took it up to $381 within minutes and then to a quick blast up to $424, a peak never to be seen again. Coinbase since then is an example of almost relentless selling as the crypto world it represents entered what those enthusiastic about it took to calling “winter” — although some have noted that it’s lasted almost as long as an ice age, so far. This week’s news … [Read more...] about Coinbase: From Hot IPO To Cold Wells Notice
A Small Daily ‘Dose’ Of Sugar And Fat Can Make Your Brain Crave More
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If you’ve ever bought a box of donuts only to find it triggers a donut phase in your life, you may appreciate the findings of a new study. The research, led by a team at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research and Yale University, finds that just a small daily addition of fat and sugar to the diet can trigger changes in taste preferences and to the brain pathways that underlie reward. The study was published in Cell Metabolism . Whether the changes are reversible and how long it would take to reverse them are up for grabs. To test whether a small shift in nutrient intake can have measurable effects, the research team gave one group of people a high-fat, high-sugar yogurt to add to their regular diets every day for eight weeks. Another group got a low-fat, low-sugar version of the yogurt for the same period of time. At the end of the eight weeks, the participants rated their preferences for food and drinks of … [Read more...] about A Small Daily ‘Dose’ Of Sugar And Fat Can Make Your Brain Crave More
The 2023 ‘Jeff Ruby Steaks’ Stakes: Major Dude And Two Phil’s Gird For Battle, And For A Berth At Churchill Come May
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Jeff Ruby, the gregarious proprietor-founder of the eponymous chain of steak houses, is most famous for his brilliant innovation at putting his “print” advertising on the fastest moving surface in athletics, namely, down the legs of pretty much every leading jockey’s blazing white trousers. At first the placement was ridiculed, but it’s now a celebrated fixture at racetracks nationwide. Much in that same trajectory, Mr. Ruby’s eponymous race at Kentucky’s “lesser” track, Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, has grown to become a standard hundred-point win-and-you're-in prep for the Kentucky Derby. Formerly the Spiral Stakes, this afternoon’s showdown is highly regarded as a bellweather for the ultimate May showdown in Louisville. It’s called the Jeff Ruby “Steaks” after the name of the formidable sponsor’s restaurant chain, but, amusingly, the Daily Racing Form refuses to admit Mr. Ruby’s pun and simply calls it "the Ruby." … [Read more...] about The 2023 ‘Jeff Ruby Steaks’ Stakes: Major Dude And Two Phil’s Gird For Battle, And For A Berth At Churchill Come May
