Energy transition inevitable in ensuring energy security
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): The transition to clean energy is inevitable as the world moves towards reversing the impact of climate change, while simultaneously strengthening energy security to hedge against external uncertainties, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict’s impact on the energy sector. TNB Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) chief operating officer Datuk Ir Roslan Abd Rahman said Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) plans to reduce its dependency on coal by 50% by 2035 and is seriously looking into renewable energy sources such as hydrogen and ammonia. “We do not want to be dependant on a single source to generate electricity. Renewable energy such as hydrogen is more secure now, as we need to import coal from producing countries such as Indonesia. “We will have a problem if Indonesia stops exporting its coals,” he told Bernama on the sidelines of a media visit to TNB’s hydropower stations in Cameron Highland recently. Also present were TNB head of state … [Read more...] about Energy transition inevitable in ensuring energy security
[email protected]: Tamil Nadu artist puts miniature tricolour on his eye
(Image credit: Umt Raja/Facebook) Eyes are known to be windows to souls. A Tamil Nadu artist seems to have taken the message quite literally and is using them to show his patriotism ahead of Independence Day 2022. UMT Raja from Coimbatore recently shared a video showing the tricolour painted in his eye. He told The Hindu he had used an egg membrane painted in the colours of the national flag and placed it on his sclera. The act took place in the presence of his eye specialist daughter, Raja added. Close He drew inspiration from a saying he heard in school -- we must protect our motherland like our eyes. Meanwhile, Raja's daughter R Kaviya said they took necessary precautions for the experiment. "I studied and verified the effects of egg white in the eye beforehand," she was quoted as saying by The Hindu. "If the paint dilutes inside the eye or gets close to the cornea, it will be very dangerous. We made sure the colour remained intact during … [Read more...] about [email protected]: Tamil Nadu artist puts miniature tricolour on his eye
Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
A leopard is seen walking across a ridge in Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park overlooking Mumbai. Los Angeles and Mumbai share many superlatives as pinnacles of cinema, fashion, and traffic congestion. But another similarity lurks in the shadows, most often seen at night walking silently on four paws. These metropolises are the worlds only megacities of 10 million-plus where large felines mountain lions in one, leopards in the other thrive by breeding, hunting and maintaining territory within urban boundaries. Long-term studies in both cities have examined how the big cats prowl through their urban jungles, and how people can best live alongside them lessons that may be applicable to more places in coming decades. In the future, there's going to be more cities like this, as urban areas further encroach on natural habitats, said biologist Audra Huffmeyer, who studies mountain lions at the University of California, Los Angeles. If we want to keep these large … [Read more...] about Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
Leopard’s head was stuck in a plastic container for 2 days. How the animal was rescued
Thirty people took part in the effort to rescue the animal in Thane. (Screengrab from image tweeted by @raww_ngo) In a challenging search and rescue operation involving forest officials, volunteers and villagers, a leopard was relieved of the painful plight about 48 hours after its head got stuck in a plastic water container in Thane district of Maharashtra. This ordeal left the big cat severely exhausted as it could neither breathe properly nor eat or drink for almost two days. The leopard was spotted by a passer-by near Badlapur village in Thane district with its head stuck in the plastic water can on Sunday night, a forest department official said on Wednesday. The man shot video clips of the leopard from his car which showed the feline was desperately trying to free its head from the container. #ALERT : #Leopard with its head stuck in #plastic container spotted at #Badlapur in #Thane @MahaForest & #rescue teams @raww_ngo are currently trying to … [Read more...] about Leopard’s head was stuck in a plastic container for 2 days. Editors Daily Rundown: Another Inflation Explosion
ANOTHER INFLATION EXPLOSION… CNBC: Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected, as price pressures intensify Shoppers paid sharply higher prices for a variety of goods in June as inflation kept its hold on a slowing U.S. economy, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. The consumer price index, a broad measure of everyday goods and services, soared 9.1% from a year ago, above the 8.8% Dow Jones estimate. That marked another month of the fastest pace for inflation going back to December 1981. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI increased 5.9%, compared to the 5.7% estimate. On a monthly basis, headline CPI rose 1.3% and core CPI was up 0.7%, compared to respective estimates of 1.1% and 0.5%. Taken together, the numbers seemed to counter the narrative that inflation may be peaking, as the gains were based across a variety of categories. Data Is The Nuclear Waste Of The Information Age: On Big Tech And Privacy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There’s scarcely a word you hear more from big tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google than “privacy” these days. To adblocker and privacy-focused browser vendor Ghostery however, what they mean when they say privacy is not what you mean when you use that word. “They’re all redefining privacy to their own benefit in a lot of ways,” Ghostery CEO Jean-Paul Schmetz told me recently in a TechFirst podcast . “But obviously, I think privacy should be defined from the perspective of the user, right ... that’s the only perspective that actually counts.” For instance, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency defines privacy as companies not sharing data they’ve gathered about you with other companies without your permission ... not companies gathering data about you, period. Google’s often-delayed deprecation of the third-party cookie (just delayed again, recently) will prevent cross-site tracking, which is good for … [Read more...] about Data Is The Nuclear Waste Of The Information Age: On Big Tech And Privacy
Complexity Can Cost You Customers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Product designers love to add features they think customers will find useful or desirable. Why not, particularly when these additional capabilities seem to offer a competitive advantage? And, on electronic products, many features add little or no cost to the finished product – they are merely software changes. There’s one problem with expanding a product’s capability: features often add friction. They may require the customer to make more choices. They often add complexity. They force customers to think . With Great Power Comes Great Complexity Here’s a case in point. I recently checked into a hotel, and, arriving in the room, found it a bit chilly. I searched the walls for a thermostat, but didn’t find one. Momentarily flummoxed, I then looked for a hand-held remote control. Sure enough, next to the typical black television remote, there was a white one to control the air conditioning. The remote had … [Read more...] about Complexity Can Cost You Customers
