Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the world gathered in Glasgow, Scotland for the COP26 UN climate convention, the conversation had not yet added “war in Europe” to the dual challenges of sustainability and biodiversity. Now, eight months later, in the Ukrainian port of Odesa, European Union Council President Charles Michel has described Ukrainian silos “full of grain, wheat and corn ready for export” locked in place by Russia’s wartime blockade of Black Sea ports. Independent data cruncher World Population Review estimates Russia and Ukraine together account for 30% of the global wheat trade. Today, global grain supplies are facing the one-two punch of not only climate disruption but also wartime supply shortages. The food you eat, the food that your food consumes, and perhaps some of your favorite libations are all affected as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine moves into a third month. In a world that has changed everyone and everything, the … [Read more...] about From Odesa To Your Dinner And Dram: How The War Over Fossil And Caloric Energy Supplies Is Shaping The 21st Century

Police Union President Thinks Obama’s America Needs Re-Educating
National Fraternal Order of Police President Chuck Canterbury had some words for President Barack Obama on what it means to be a police officer. Canterbury told The Daily Caller News Foundation that police officers don’t trust politicians and their management, fearing they’ll become a scapegoat if something goes awry. He said the president blames police officers and emphasizes de-escalation due to a lack of understanding of what it’s like to be a cop. “All we’re hearing from the Obama administration is de-escalate,” Canterbury told TheDCNF. “That’s coming from somebody who has never been on the ground getting the crap beat out of them.” Canterbury referenced President Obama’s comments since Ferguson and the 21st Century Policing Report , saying they “all want to look at law enforcement as kinder and gentler, but that’s looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. If I’m on the scene and a suspect has a knife, I can’t look at him and say ‘the president of the United States … [Read more...] about Police Union President Thinks Obama’s America Needs Re-Educating
The long struggle to bring a supermarket to a nearly all-Black Buffalo neighborhood
New York (CNN Business) In August of 2001, more than 100 people gathered on the East Side of Buffalo, New York. The setting, an empty lot in a nearly all-Black neighborhood of this upstate New York city, drew prominent visitors. They included Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer, the two US senators from the state at the time; Anthony Masiello, then the mayor of Buffalo; Byron Brown, the current mayor of the city; and other officials. The 90-minute event featured 18 speakers and was described as "Buffalo's longest-ever news conference." The group was there to announce that Tops Friendly Markets, a leading Northeast grocery chain, would be built on the site — located where an A&P supermarket stood in the 1960s when the neighborhood was a hub of economic activity for Buffalo's Black community. The announcement marked the culmination of more than a decade of activism by community advocates and others to address food inequities on Buffalo's East … [Read more...] about The long struggle to bring a supermarket to a nearly all-Black Buffalo neighborhood

Macron’s Win Is an Opportunity for France and the EU: Lionel Laurent
Emmanuel Macron (File picture Bloomberg In 2017, France bucked the populist trend by voting for Emmanuel Macron against europhobic Marine Le Pen. In 2022, it has done so again – just as Slovenia looks set to eject its nationalist leader. An overwhelming display of pro-EU values? Not quite. Macron’s lead is narrower than last time – around 58%, rather than 66% — and turnout was at its lowest in decades. Voter fatigue runs high. Yet visions of an anti-elite “domino” effect after Brexit and Trump are increasingly fading in a post-Ukraine, post-Covid world. The French have voted for a France at the heart, not the fringes, of Europe – albeit one that has to better protect its people. There is opportunity here for Macron. France has strategic weight as the EU’s only nuclear power, with an economy that’s outperforming Germany’s and that is less dependent on Russian gas in a time of war and surging energy prices. But it needs better direction. Close The … [Read more...] about Macron’s Win Is an Opportunity for France and the EU: Lionel Laurent
Cluttercore: What’s really behind Gen Z’s revolt against minimalism?
Have you heard maximalism is in and minimalism is out? Rooms bursting at the seams with clashing florals, colorful furniture and innumerable knick-knacks, this is what defines the new interiors trend cluttercore (or bricabracomania ). advertisement advertisement Some say it’s a war between Gen Z (born 1997-2012) and millennials (born 1981-1996), symptomatic of bigger differences. Others say it’s a pandemic response, where our domestic prisons became cuddly cocoons, stimulating our senses, connecting us with other people and places . But what really lays behind the choice to clutter or cull? Why do some people revel in collections of novelty eggcups? Or have so many framed pictures you can barely see the (ferociously busy) wallpaper? And why do those at the other end of the spectrum refuse to have even the essential stuff visible in the home, hiding it behind thousands of pounds’ of incognito cupboards? One important reason for the clash between … [Read more...] about Cluttercore: What’s really behind Gen Z’s revolt against minimalism?

Mahón, Mayonnaise And More: Menorca’s Capital Delivers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As you sail Spain’s Balearic Islands and enter one of the world’s biggest natural harbors, you might wonder how you had never even heard of Mahón. Calm and quiet, the capital of Menorca island was built up by the British in the 18th century and retains some quirky Anglo traits. It doesn’t take long to wander its compact and fine old town that sits high above its coveted harbor. And just minutes outside of city limits you’ll be exploring a rural realm of nature reserves that coexist with luxury agritourism and fine dining establishments. While the British built solid military bastions all over Menorca, it’s the smaller things, such as sash and bow windows along with Georgian architecture, that are the more famous English characteristics of Mahón. Some of those British era buildings today house boutiques in which you’ll find a most Menorcan traditional item in avarcas , simple slingback leather and rubber-soled sandals that … [Read more...] about Mahón, Mayonnaise And More: Menorca’s Capital Delivers
Dow Theory: Is It Still Relevant? Editor Of TheDowTheory.Com Says Yes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Manuel Blay is editor of TheDowTheory.com , a website that closely tracks the price movements of the Dow Industrials, the Dow Transports and the Dow Utilities, among other indexes. It’s an old-school type of looking at charts that you don’t hear about much when technical analysts gather to compare notes. Blay says you should be paying attention, there’s lots to be learned. I had a chance to ask him some questions about it and here’s how it went: John Navin : Dow Theory is an old form of price chart analysis. Why is it still relevant? Manuel Blay : It is more relevant than ever for three reasons: 1) Because it works. By this, I mean: it cuts drawdowns and outperforms buy and hold. And it performs much better than its trend-following competitors, namely moving averages and breakout systems. 2) Because it was a track record spanning +120 years (for stocks). 3) Because it can be applied to many markets. … [Read more...] about Dow Theory: Is It Still Relevant?
