Frankie Taggart (Agence France-Presse) (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Washington, DC ● Wed, June 29 2022 The United States’ Supreme Court ruling ending the nationwide right to abortion was one of the most seismic domestic political shifts in a generation -- upending the crucial midterm elections that will decide who controls Congress next year. Republicans are celebrating the culmination of almost 50 years of activism around the argument that Roe v. Wade -- the 1973 landmark ruling guaranteeing federal protection of abortion rights -- was wrongly decided. Democrats, too, have been galvanized by the scrapping of half a century of reproductive rights, and by fears Republicans will go further and introduce a federal abortion ban if they retake Congress -- threatening legal access nationwide. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no … [Read more...] about US abortion ruling roils midterm election campaign

White House Dismisses Sen. Warren’s Idea Of Putting Abortion Clinics In National Parks
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday dismissed Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s idea of putting abortion clinics on national parks. Warren, during a Monday interview with The Washington Post, suggested the Biden administration develop Planned Parenthood “tents” along the edges of national parks. The suggestion came in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling to strike down Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that had deemed abortion is protected under the U.S. Constitution. “We understand the proposal is well intentioned but here’s the thing, it could actually put women and providers at risk … And importantly in states where abortion is now illegal – women and providers who are not federal employees, as you look at the federal lands, could be potentially prosecuted … there’s actually dangerous ramifications to doing this,” Jean-Pierre said in response to Warren’s suggestion. Jean-Pierre’s dismissal came shortly after Vice President Kamala … [Read more...] about White House Dismisses Sen. Warren’s Idea Of Putting Abortion Clinics In National Parks
Singapore’s surging rents shock expats and encourage scammers
- A + A SINGAPORE (June 28): When Canadian expat Michelle went to renew the lease on her three-story house in Singapore in May, her landlord wanted to raise the rent by almost 40%. Michelle tried to negotiate but the owner wouldn’t budge on the S$10,000 (US$7,200) a month asking price. She’s moving her family into a three-bedroom apartment next month. “I took what I could get,” said Michelle, who asked not to use her full name on concern it may impact her business in the city-state. There’s “a lot of greed at the moment.” Rents are skyrocketing in Singapore, particularly in the prime accommodation favored by expatriate residents, as surging demand from locals and newer arrivals collides with pandemic-induced delays in supply. Rental prices for the private properties leased by expats are rising on average by 20% to 40%, according to 10 real estate agents interviewed by Bloomberg , though some landlords are even asking for double the previous rent. Supreme Court Backs School Football Coach Who Was Punished For Praying
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A high school in Washington wrongly punished a football coach after he prayed on the field, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, potentially paving the way for fewer restrictions on how public school employees can express their religion while on the job despite Constitutional restrictions on religion in schools. Key Facts The court sided 6-3 with Joseph Kennedy, a former high school football coach in Washington who was punished after praying on the football field during games, which the school said violated the separation of church and state. Turkey lifting objections to Sweden, Finland joining NATO
By JILL LAWLESS and JOSEPH WILSON MADRID (AP) — Turkey agreed Tuesday to lift its opposition to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, a breakthrough in an impasse clouding a leaders’ summit in Madrid amid Europe’s worst security crisis in decades triggered by the war in Ukraine. After urgent top-level talks, alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said “we now have an agreement that paves the way for Finland and Sweden to join NATO.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted Sweden and Finland to abandon their long-held nonaligned status and apply to join NATO. But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had blocked the move, insisting the Nordic pair change their stance on Kurdish rebel groups that Turkey considers terrorists. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said the three countries’ leaders signed a joint agreement after talks on Tuesday. Turkey said it had “got what it wanted” including “full cooperation … in the fight against” the rebel groups. The agreement comes at … [Read more...] about Turkey lifting objections to Sweden, Finland joining NATO
