Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A couple of years ago, two old friends found themselves both in an unusual position: They were venture capitalists of color in a business that is dominated by white people. In 2021, Austin Clements and Ajay Relan formed their own firm, Slauson & Co., named for the famous thoroughfare in south L.A. It’s one of the highest-profile of many recently formed firms, initiatives and funds – many started in the wake of George Floyd’s murder — that aim to diversify entrepreneurship. The premise is that diverse venture capitalists will fund more diverse founders, who in turn, as they succeed, will create jobs and wealth in diverse communities. It’s a questionable premise in its ambition. Only a tiny fraction of startups in the United States, about 1%, receive venture capital. Even fewer succeed. And VC-backed winners tend to employ relatively few people, because part of the profitability they need to scale depends on keeping … [Read more...] about In Slauson & Co., Google Investor Ron Conway Is Betting On More Than Money

Those numbers mark a new record in reigning longevity: Not only is she the longest-reigning British monarch, but the longest-reigning monarch ever. ADVERTISEMENT The previous record was held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for more than 63 years. “Not one (record) to which I have ever aspired,” she said when she beat that record in 2015. “Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones. My own is no exception.” ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT An Extraordinary Life And she certainly has gone on to be part of many milestones, including welcoming a new … [Read more...] about With 25,000 Days Of Work, Queen Elizabeth Breaks New Record: A Life In Photos
One Big Mac a day for 50 years: Meet 68-year-old Guinness record holder
(Image credit: www.guinnessworldrecords.com) A man in the United States ate one Mc Donald’s Big Mac burger almost daily for 50 years. His binge has earned him a place in the Guinness World Book of Records. Donald Gorske, 68, had his first Big Mac in Wisconsin in 1972. He told Guinness it was “love at first bite”. "In that moment I said 'I'm going to probably eat these for the rest of my life',” he added. Gorske first set the record of “eating most Mac burgers in a lifetime” in 1999. He had eaten 15,490 burgers by then. Since then, his record has more than doubled. By 2021, the number of burgers he consumed went up to 32,340. Close It was on May 17 this year that he reached his big 50-year munching milestone. Guinness said Gorske had missed eating the burgers for only eight days in 50 years. He has saved burger cartons from different time periods in a glass case -- a testament to changes that happened over decades. Gorske celebrated his record by going … [Read more...] about One Big Mac a day for 50 years: Meet 68-year-old Guinness record holder
Upping The Voltage: Why Britain’s Electric Vehicle Battery Startups Need Financial Support
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Back in the mists of time - 2017 to be precise - the then Business Secretary Greg Clark announced ambitious plans to catapult Britain to the forefront of the global electric vehicle battery manufacturing industry. At the heart of his initiative was the establishment of the Faraday Challenge - essentially a series of government-sponsored competitions designed to promote research and development. This was good news for startups working in the field. So, how are things going five years on? Well, according to a report published this week by the Green Finance Institute , there is still a window of opportunity for the U.K. to become a significant player in this market. But - and this is a very big but - that won’t happen without finance. As things stand at the moment, the EV battery industry is worth around $41 billion with China holding about 85 percent of the market share. According to the GFI report, the market value is … [Read more...] about Upping The Voltage: Why Britain’s Electric Vehicle Battery Startups Need Financial Support
Brave Souls: ‘Unicorn’ Crypto Project Ties Value To Equity In Emerging Growth Companies
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Alex Konanykhin is a brave soul. He started a cryptocurrency project at the start of a war in Ukraine, decades-high inflation in the U.S. and Europe, Fed monetary tightening, and the potential for food shortages driving up commodity prices. He seems to have anticipated the meltdown of the traditional coins as his February 23 press release touts Unicoin as the “solution to the high volatility of cryptocoins.” His idea stems from a notion popularized by Warren Buffet, a famous Bitcoin BTC bear, who said that cryptocurrency has no value because it isn’t backed by anything. Cryptocurrencies are not backed by the good faith and credit of a nation, let alone the start-up founders or their venture capitalist investors. It isn’t backed by hard assets either. It’s not like Dogecoin DOGE is backed by Shiba Inu SHIB dog breeders or anything – less dogs, higher Doge. It’s literally a joke coin worth tens of billions … [Read more...] about Brave Souls: ‘Unicorn’ Crypto Project Ties Value To Equity In Emerging Growth Companies

Investment firms in the crosshairs
The Capital Market Supervisory Board (CMSB) under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has resolved to disallow securities-issuing companies or "investment companies" from offering new securities to the public to protect investors' interests. Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, secretary-general of the SEC, said the resolution at the board's most recent meeting on Tuesday is to prevent investment companies from legal infringement, including regulatory arbitrage. The board defined investment companies as companies that allocate more than 40% of their assets to passive investment, or investing without participating in management. This includes investment in securities, digital assets and futures contracts, but investment with the purpose of hedging would be excluded. Under the new ruling, only non-investment companies would be able to offer newly issued securities to the public. However, financial businesses are exempted from the ruling, including commercial banks, financial … [Read more...] about Investment firms in the crosshairs
Joe Biden tendng to business in South Korea visit with Hyundai exec
SEOUL, South Korea — President Joe Biden is tending to both business and security interests Sunday as he wraps up a three-day visit to South Korea, showcasing Hyundai’s pledge to build a $5.5 billion electric vehicle and battery factory in Georgia and visiting U.S. and South Korean troops monitoring the rapidly evolving North Korean nuclear threat. The major U.S. investment by a South Korean company, which was formally unveiled in Georgia on Friday, is a reflection of how the U.S. and South Korea are leveraging their longstanding military ties into a broader economic partnership. The U.S. president has made greater economic cooperation with South Korea a priority, saying on Saturday that “it will bring our two countries even closer together, cooperating even more closely than we already do, and help strengthen our supply chains, secure them against shocks and give our economies a competitive edge.” The pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February has forced a deeper … [Read more...] about Joe Biden tendng to business in South Korea visit with Hyundai exec
When Life Inside A Hedge Fund Left Her Wanting, She Started A $2 Million Company In Rural Kenya
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 1999, Rocío Pérez Ochoa graduated with a Phd in particle physics from CERN, in Geneva, one of the top organizations for scientific research in the world. Following the path of many bright minds over the last few decades, she got a job at a hedge fund and moved to the City of London. In a financial center, one of the birthplaces of capitalism, she had an outwardly great life: education, career, family. But having children, a daughter in 2004 and a son in 2007, changed things. After they were born, she started to ask herself: Am I doing something that would make them proud? Hedge funds are investment vehicles for the world’s wealthy. So, the answer to the question was a definite no. “Making rich people richer does not really matter,” she said. Pérez Ochoa went back to school then, for a master’s in climate change, and then got deeper, eventually starting a company with a colleague, David Disch. The company, … [Read more...] about When Life Inside A Hedge Fund Left Her Wanting, She Started A $2 Million Company In Rural Kenya
