Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit, in March of 2020, colleges everywhere (including Johns Hopkins University, where I teach and conduct research) shut down and sent everyone home. Within two weeks, we switched all of our classes to Zoom. It was a remarkable pivot, and necessary at the time. But we’re now more than two years into the pandemic, and many colleges and universities are still holding classes on Zoom, or offering a Zoom option for students who want it. This has become, to put it bluntly, a disaster for students. The Chronicle of Higher Education published a lengthy article in April that surveyed faculty all over the country. It paints a grim picture: students are reporting mental health problems in record numbers, grades are low, and attendance is even lower. Depression is widespread. College life, it seems, is not good. Most universities returned to in-person classes this past fall, and some … [Read more...] about Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
The Secret Ingredient to Finding Your Next Million-Dollar Innovation Idea
Companies inattentive to innovation get left behind--or worse, fail altogether. While those of us over 40 fondly remember starting our weekends with a trip to the video store, for example, the experience pales in comparison to conveniently streaming blockbuster entertainment from the comfort of your couch. While hailing a cab in New York City was fun the first time, there's nothing like the certainty of watching the map on your screen as a dedicated driver heads your way to pick you up. In other words, though one experience may have delighted us initially, a more innovative--and perhaps industry altering--option could be waiting in the wings vying for our business. Successful brands are those that out-innovate the competition. They never settle for the status quo, always seeking the next differentiator for their category. They survive in today's highly competitive landscape by continually evolving to deliver better products, better services, and--most importantly--better customer … [Read more...] about The Secret Ingredient to Finding Your Next Million-Dollar Innovation Idea

The brands TomboyX and Humankind will both bring queer-friendly, limited-edition options to Target’s shelves. LGBTQ+ people deserve a wider selection of underwear and swimsuits. Most clothing brands create underwear and swimwear in distinct “male” and “female” categories. For example, swimsuits are often limited to board shorts marketed to men, while bikinis or form-fitting one-pieces are marketed to women. TomboyX makes underwear that are comfortable for people of any and all genders. Humankind sells swimwear like swim shirts and board shorts. Both of these brands help LGBTQ+ customers feel more comfortable in their own skin. Customers can find TomboyX clothing online and in some stores throughout May. Stock markets struggle as fears over economy grow
- A + A LONDON (May 16): European stocks slipped on Monday and Wall Street was set for a lower open, as investor sentiment struggled to recover from last week's sell off amid fears of a slowdown in economic growth. Global shares hit their lowest point in 18 months last week, with investors worried that rising interest rates to counter high inflation will damage the global economy. Unexpectedly weak economic data kept from China kept those worries in centre stage on Monday. April retail sales plunged 11.1% on the year, almost twice the fall forecast, as full or partial Covid-19 lockdowns were imposed in dozens of cities. Industrial output dropped 2.9% when analysts had looked for a slight increase. At 1104 GMT, the MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 50 countries, was up around 0.1% on the day, struggling to recover from last week's lows. Europe's STOXX 600 was down 0.2%, while London's FTSE 100 was down flat. US stock index futures pointed to a … [Read more...] about Stock markets struggle as fears over economy grow
