Robert Hale became a billionaire capitalizing on the technology Alexander Graham Bell patented in 1876. But time’s up, and now the 21st century is calling. “G ood fun, good fun!” bellows Rob Hale on a recent Friday morning. It’s 6:30 a.m., and two dozen employees of Granite Telecommunications have gathered for one of their CEO’s favorite rituals: hourlong morning workouts, a grueling grind of pushups, squats, burpees, sit-ups, planks, jumping jacks and stair runs through the company’s four-story office headquarters in Quincy, Massachusetts, a blue-collar burb 10 miles south of Boston. Hale, 56, likes routine. His typical workday includes nabbing the parking lot’s fifth spot (five is his lucky number), downing four extra-large decaf Dunkin’ coffees (two in the morning, two in the afternoon), overseeing a second group workout at noon (this one, mercifully, 20 minutes), then getting home in time for dinner with Karen, his wife of 28 years. “My life is very regimented,” Hale … [Read more...] about This Dot Com Crash Survivor Bet On 100-Year-Old Landlines. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After losing around 700 tanks in Ukraine through this spring, the Russian army began pulling 50-year-old T-62 tanks out of long-term storage and sending them toward the front. The Ukrainian army by then had captured hundreds of Russian tanks. It was only a matter of time before the Ukrainians got their hands on some intact T-62s, too. As Russia’s wider war in Ukraine grinds into its eighth month, the Ukrainian army has captured at least three T-62s that outside analysts can confirm . Will the Ukrainians fix up these antique tanks and use them against the Russians? Every indication is—yes. The Ukrainian army doesn’t hesitate to use weapons even older than the T-62 is. The 41-ton T-62 with its 115-millimeter main gun was in production in the Soviet Union from 1961 to 1975. It was the USSR’s most important tank until the T-72 entered service in 1969. The Soviet army in the 1980s began shifting the T-62 to … [Read more...] about Ukraine Is Capturing Russia’s Old T-62 Tanks. Will It Use Them?
The Philippines launched a Special Investors Resident Visa (SIRV) offering permanent residency to any foreigner who invests at least US$75,000 in business or securities. The visa reaps more rewards for a smaller investment than Thailand ’s 10 year Long Term Resident (LTR) visa, which hasn’t attracted as much attention as initially hoped since its launch last month. Once a foreigner has invested in the Philippines, they are immediately awarded residency – something that Thailand does not offer. The SIRV holder, their spouse, and children can freely enter and exit the Philippines whenever they desire, forever. Whereas, investors applying for a 10 year visa in Thailand are required to have assets worth 36.5 million baht (US$1 million), an annual income of about 3 million baht (US$80,000) per year, and an investment in Thailand worth 18.3 million baht (USS$500,000). For pensioners to qualify for Thailand’s LTR visa, they need to be aged at least 50 years old and have an … [Read more...] about Philippines offers attractive alternative to Thailand’s 10 year LTR visa

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When Anthony Ferraro and his then-girlfriend, Kelly, made a video in January 2021 about his daily life as someone who was born blind and posted it to TikTok, neither of them had very high expectations. In fact, Ferraro hadn’t wanted to do it at all; in early 2020, when repetitive TikTok dances were all the rage, he had no interest in the app. But the 27-year-old responded to the shift in TikTok videos that happened as the pandemic—and isolation—continued on for months, leading to more vlog-style snippets of people narrating their day-to-day life, without music or viral sound effects. When the couple went to sleep that night, Ferraro says, the video had about 100 views and he had 30 followers. The next morning, the video had 40,000 views and Ferraro had gained 1,000 followers. “I was getting hundreds of these messages that were overwhelmingly positive and that I was inspiring others to keep going, and I got to … [Read more...] about Skateboarder And TikTok Star Anthony Ferraro, Who Is Blind, Is Pushing Forward Inclusivity In Action Sports
