Pac-12 stock report: ASU’s transfer help, Grand Canyon talent and a lack of QB clarity
Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the field … Rising: ASU’s outlook Were offseason rosters moves tallied on a scoreboard, the Sun Devils were losing 70-7 in the fourth quarter. But they mustered a rally last week when the transfer portal produced a quarterback who just might alter the 2022 trajectory. Emory Jones won’t be mistaken for a future first-round pick — his performance last season at Florida was decidedly uneven. But Jones instantly improves the overall state of ASU’s quarterback depth and should be considered the frontrunner for the starting job over inexperienced returnees Daylin McLemore and Trenton Bourguet and transfer Paul Tyson, who threw a handful of passes for Alabama. Jones owns more than 400 career attempts and faced some of the best defenses in the country during his Gator career. ASU lost its top playmakers and key offensive linemen. If forced to play a rookie quarterback, the situation would have been deeply dire. With Jones running … [Read more...] about Pac-12 stock report: ASU’s transfer help, Grand Canyon talent and a lack of QB clarity
Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues Game 2: Three keys to victory for Colorado
Will the Avalanche begin 6-0 in the postseason for the second consecutive year? Colorado swept Nashville in the first round and defeated St. Louis, 3-2, in overtime in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series on Tuesday at Ball Arena. Here are three keys for Colorado in Game 2 on Thursday night: 1. Clean line changes. St. Louis’ tying goal that forced overtime in Game 1 came on a bad Avalanche line change, its third such costly mistake of the playoffs. The Blues were on the power play and Colorado made a four-man change with no weakside defense. Defenseman Sam Girard cleared the puck out of Colorado’s zone but only to St. Louis’ blueline, where defenseman Justin Faulk quickly passed it up ice to the Avs’ blueline to forward Jordan Kyrou, who skated in and scored while four fresh Avs defenders were scrambling for position. “Trust me, we’ve talked about that a lot,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “We have to have a couple of guys on the weak side … It’s a discipline thing. … [Read more...] about Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues Game 2: Three keys to victory for Colorado

Leaders Share Strategies To Reinvent Higher Education
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Higher education has been the bedrock of our society for over 300 years, with just under 4,000 degree-granting institutions. Recently, however, skyrocketing tuition costs have created several challenges and have the general public questioning the value and purpose of higher education. With much public outcry on the value proposition of higher education, can the industry be sustained or reinvented? Many articles have been written about higher education “landlords,” as institutions compete for students based on amenities and facilities. This intense competition for colleges and universities to attract students has resulted in expensive amenities and accommodations to convince students to attend. While this is a nice to have for students, it has also driven up the cost of a college degree to the point where many cannot afford a degree. As competition increases and state and federal subsidies decrease, these additional costs are … [Read more...] about Leaders Share Strategies To Reinvent Higher Education
Survey: America’s Uninsured Rate Is Down To 10% – And Falling
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New data has raised a tantalizing possibility: That for the first time, America's uninsured rate will fall below 10%. (If it hasn't already; the most recently reported data was collected three months ago.) The findings come from the Urban Institute's Health Reform Monitoring Survey , a quarterly survey of non-elderly Americans. And as of March 2015, the Urban Institute's survey found that 10.0% of nonelderly adults were uninsured, down from 17.8% in September 2013, before the Affordable Care Act's insurance exchanges first launched. No major survey has ever found that the uninsured rate in America has hit single digits. However, the uninsured rate is already down to 7.5% in states that have expanded Medicaid under Obamacare, Urban researchers concluded. Of course, Urban's data is just one snapshot of the uninsured in America. Different surveys use different questions and methodologies. Some are thought … [Read more...] about Survey: America’s Uninsured Rate Is Down To 10% – And Falling
Spectre of 2023 global recession looms
Vehicles queue to refuel at a Bangchak petrol station in Bangkok. The cabinet agreed on Tuesday to cut the excise tax on diesel by 5 baht per litre for two months until July 20 to tame inflation. Sarot Meksophawannakul In economics, there is no such thing as a surprise. Major economic events like rising inflation, interest rate hikes, currency depreciation, even economic recession can be detected as far as a year ahead. Take the recent spike in global inflation as an example. The rapid price rise of world commodities began a year before Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24. The rise in a broad range of commodity prices reflected the recovery in demand after the outbreak of Covid-19 and deteriorating supply due to a lack of investment to expand and maintain supply chains during the Covid years. Here are some examples of commodity price hikes from January 2021 to January 2022, basically a month before Russia invaded: crude oil climbed 57%, phosphate (a key ingredient for … [Read more...] about Spectre of 2023 global recession looms
