How Malaysia ended up owing $15 billion to Sulu sultan’s heirs
Jamalul Kiram III, a former Sultan of the Sulu region of the southern Philippines, answers questions as he sits surrounded by his followers, during a brief news conference in front of the Blue Mosque in Taguig city, south of Manila February 22, 2013. REUTERS FILE PHOTO KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia is scrambling to protect its assets as the descendants of the last sultan of the remote Philippine region of Sulu look to enforce a $15 billion arbitration award in a dispute over a colonial-era land deal. In 1878, two European colonists signed a deal with the sultan for the use of his territory in present-day Malaysia – an agreement that independent Malaysia honored until 2013, paying the monarch’s descendants about $1,000 a year. Now, 144 years later after the original deal, Malaysia is on the hook for the second largest arbitration award on record for stopping the payments after a bloody incursion by supporters of Sultan Mohammed Jamalul Alam’s heirs in which more than 50 people were … [Read more...] about How Malaysia ended up owing $15 billion to Sulu sultan’s heirs
CJ ENM reports 25 billion won net loss in the second quarter
CJ ENM lost 25 billion won ($19 million) on a net basis in the second quarter. The loss was mainly due to continued expenses related to the purchase of certain assets from Endeavor, a Beverly Hills, California production company, and losses incurred by CJ ENM investments. The market consensus was for a 43.5-billion-won net profit, as compiled by FnGuide. Revenue was a consensus-beating 1.2 trillion won, up 31.3 percent on year, helped by the success of “Yumi’s Cells.” Disappointing box office results of its much-anticipated films “Broker” and “Decision to Leave” contributed to the loss. For “Broker,” 1.23 million tickets were sold, failing to reach the 1.5-million break-even-point. For “Decision to Leave,"1.71 million tickets were sold as of Wednesday. Endeavor Content lost 9.2 billion won to during the second quarter, from 17.8 billion won in the first. ‘The Avengers’: Hollywood Wasted 10 Years Chasing Marvel’s Box Office Success
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Opening overseas ten years ago, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers was quite possibly the final nail in the coffin which Hollywood had been building for itself since Jaws. Star Wars sent Hollywood on a mad dash to make A-level versions of B movies, while Batman convinced Hollywood that any untapped property could be made into a blockbuster franchise. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Lord of the Rings both positioned mega-bucks four-quadrant action fantasy IP as the only ideal game in town (while convincing the industry that every property should be a trilogy). Michael Bay’s Transformers showed the value of essentially making big-budget kids flicks aimed at nostalgic adults. But the blowout success of The Avengers may have cost theatrical the game, both due the sheer number of “wrong lessons” learned and the sheer time/money spent (as streaming was quickly gaining relevance) on attemtping to approximate its … [Read more...] about ‘The Avengers’: Hollywood Wasted 10 Years Chasing Marvel’s Box Office Success
