South Korea is shrugging off Omicron’s summer return
Concertgoers picnic at a park in Incheon on Friday afternoon. (Yonhap via The Korea Herald/Asia News Network) SEOUL — South Koreans are not letting rising cases of COVID-19 get in the way of their summer plans, with travel and businesses already freed up by current policies. So far in August, an average of 101,290 cases and 31 deaths were reported per day, climbing from the 80,648 cases and 24 deaths seen between July 25-31. Over two days on Friday and Saturday, 92 patients with COVID-19 died — the highest since mid-May in the aftermath of a deadly Omicron wave that peaked in March. In recent briefings, the government’s COVID-19 response headquarters has vowed that social distancing won’t be returning, while expanding the eligibility of fourth vaccine doses to people in their 50s. As the cumulative count of cases here crossed 20 million, which is 38 percent of the entire South Korean population, Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Lee Ki-il said in an Aug. 3 address that … [Read more...] about South Korea is shrugging off Omicron’s summer return
Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
A leopard is seen walking across a ridge in Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park overlooking Mumbai. Los Angeles and Mumbai share many superlatives as pinnacles of cinema, fashion, and traffic congestion. But another similarity lurks in the shadows, most often seen at night walking silently on four paws. These metropolises are the worlds only megacities of 10 million-plus where large felines mountain lions in one, leopards in the other thrive by breeding, hunting and maintaining territory within urban boundaries. Long-term studies in both cities have examined how the big cats prowl through their urban jungles, and how people can best live alongside them lessons that may be applicable to more places in coming decades. In the future, there's going to be more cities like this, as urban areas further encroach on natural habitats, said biologist Audra Huffmeyer, who studies mountain lions at the University of California, Los Angeles. If we want to keep these large … [Read more...] about Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai

I Drove My Used Electric Nissan Leaf From Snohomish Washington to Tigard Oregon
What would happen if I took my used electric car on a 430-mile road trip? I decided to find out. Here's what I learned along the way. When I tell people I have an electric car, their first question is always the same: How far can I go on a charge? It's a logical question and one I pondered mightily before buying my car, a 2015 Nissan Leaf . But it doesn't have a simple answer. I always begin with a disclaimer: There are many electric cars that go much farther than mine. The Chevy Bolt has a range of 238 miles on a charge. Some versions of the Tesla Model S can go 335 miles. That makes my Leaf's range of 84 miles seem wimpy. But I wanted to see if I would like driving electric and I didn't want a huge car loan and I've never owned a new car in my life. I bought the Leaf because it only cost $10,000. Every electric vehicle driver knows that a car's official range is truly misleading. Range is very variable, depending on a lot of factors. Are you going uphill or … [Read more...] about I Drove My Used Electric Nissan Leaf From Snohomish Washington to Tigard Oregon

After deluge, climate change fears make S.Korea prioritise Seoul flood defences
- A + A SEOUL (Aug 11): The heaviest rain in Seoul in 115 years has spurred the South Korean capital to revive a US$1.15 billion plan to improve drainage after floods exposed how even the affluent Gangnam district is vulnerable to climate change-driven extreme weather. Experts say the city's capacity to drain water is far behind what's needed to handle a deluge like the one suffered this week. That has disasterous implications for low-lying areas like Gangnam, as these bouts of extreme weather are becoming increasingly common. This week's torrential rain killed at least 11 people across the northern part of the country, as of Thursday morning. The downpour, which began on Monday and shifted southwards on Wednesday, knocked out power, caused landslides and flooded roads and subways. Monetary estimates of the damage were still being compiled. In the wake of the downpour, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced on Wednesday the city will spend 1.5 trillion won (US$1.15 … [Read more...] about After deluge, climate change fears make S.Korea prioritise Seoul flood defences
Chipotle lists locations exposed in payment card security breach
Chipotle Mexican Grill on Friday provided details on a payment card security breach in late March and early April, including what stores were hit and on what days. An investigation of the security incident, first reported April 25 , found that malware installed on the company’s system accessed payment card data from point-of-sale devices at a variety of Chipotle and Pizzeria Locale restaurants from March 24 to April 18. The malware searched for track data coming from the magnet stripe of payment cards. That information can include the name of the cardholder, the card number, expiration date and the verification code. “There is no indication that other customer information was affected,” Chipotle said in a statement. Not all locations were hit, but many in Colorado were. The company is providing specific details online of what Chipotle restaurants and Pizzeria Locale locations had security breaches and on what days. In Denver, for example, payment information was … [Read more...] about Chipotle lists locations exposed in payment card security breach
