Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Several high-level global officials criticized Russia on Tuesday morning for its role in the worsening international food crisis sparked by its invasion of Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain exporters whose ports remain blocked by Russian forces, a move the United Nations says could cause millions to die. Key Facts David Beasley, head of the United Nations World Food Programme, called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “have a heart” and unblock ports to prevent unnecessary deaths in an interview Tuesday with CNN from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Earlier Tuesday in Davos, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union’s European Commission, accused Russia of using “hunger and grain to wield power” and using food as “blackmail.” The U.N. and EU estimate about 20 million tons of grain are stuck in Ukraine, one of the world’s five largest exporters of … [Read more...] about World Outrage Grows Toward Russia—This Time Over Food Crisis Sparked By Invasion

The Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) Niche Still Often Makes Sense In A Cloud-Centric World
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Denver Hunter is Director of Information Technology at PenServ Plan Services, Inc . How many times have you bid out a cloud solution only to discover that the cost to migrate to one of the big three is shocking, to say the least? In the era of cloud this and that, owning your own hardware can seem passé. The reality is that while cloud computing makes sense when it comes to everyday tools like email and collaboration software, the cloud is not a silver bullet for every single business process. In fact, some processes will generate additional costs when you factor in DR (disaster recovery) site replication across zones or you have the need to structure nodes for existing license agreements. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) delivers a “private cloud” solution using integrated hardware components managed by a software layer. While the offerings and terminology employed will vary across product offerings (you will … [Read more...] about The Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) Niche Still Often Makes Sense In A Cloud-Centric World
My Say: Finance is driving the world to stagflation
This article first appeared in Forum, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on May 23, 2022 - May 29, 2022. - A + A The world is being pressed by financial interests to raise interest rates, ostensibly to check inflation. After the US Federal Reserve started raising interest rates, more central banks have been doing likewise. Considering inflation’s contemporary causes, such “follow the leader” central bank mimicry cannot check it except by slowing economies. Worse, this has meant taking on huge new risks, seriously damaging world economic prospects in the medium and long term. Inflation bogey dangerous Much earlier, World Bank supported research had shown that moderate inflation — in the range of 15% to 30% — was not harmful to growth, and could “be reduced only at a substantial cost to … growth”. Nonetheless, “the ratio of fervent beliefs to tangible evidence seems unusually high on this topic”. Unsurprisingly, central banks are still trying to keep inflation … [Read more...] about My Say: Finance is driving the world to stagflation
Soros says Ukraine may be start of World War Three
- A + A DAVOS (May 25): Billionaire financier George Soros said on Tuesday that Russia's invasion of Ukraine may have been the beginning of World War Three so the best way to preserve free civilisation was for the West to defeat President Vladimir Putin's forces. Soros, 91, a legendary hedge fund manager who earned fame by betting against the pound in 1992, cast the Ukraine war as part of a broader struggle between open societies and closed societies such as China and Russia which were in the ascent. "The invasion may have been the beginning of the Third World War and our civilization may not survive it," Soros told Davos, according to a text of his speech released by his office. "The best and perhaps only way to preserve our civilization is to defeat Putin as soon as possible. That's the bottom line." Soros said that Putin, who says the "special operation" in Ukraine is going to plan and will achieve all the Kremlin's aims, now believed the invasion was a … [Read more...] about Soros says Ukraine may be start of World War Three
