Today, in 2023, we live in a unique world where so many have the opportunity to wrap work around life rather than life around work. No longer are the traditional days of long commutes and dry offices. While I'm generalizing here, as many still do have to go into the office, what I'm alluding to is the redefined landscape of work-life balance. The opportunities for travel and exploration are endless when you can work remotely. You can travel halfway around the world, live in an entirely new environment and immerse yourself in an enchantingly different culture—all while maintaining your job. However, what glitters isn't always gold. For nomads, that paradigm sits within FOMO (fear of missing out). It's a complaint inflated with privilege, but a common complaint I hear … [Read more...] about Digital Nomading: The Secret To Eliminating The Distractions Of Travel

The Answer To Whether I’m Too Old To Get Another Dog
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Author Wasted No Time In Solving His Dilemma A couple of months ago I wrote an article questioning whether getting a dog at this point in my life is a good idea. While my wife and I strongly missed the companionship and unconditional love we got from our pets, our age, health status, and lifestyle were definitely considerations. We were free to travel without having to find a sitter, we didn’t have to rush home after dinner and a show to the poor pup to let him out of his crate. And we didn’t have expensive vet bills! I closed the article with the question of whether the dog we lost 6 months before that would be our last dog. That question — defining the problem — was the first step. Here’s our answer to the question in the form of a photo of our new puppy, Beau, half border collie and half poodle. He’s currently about 16 weeks old and weighs 16 pounds, on his way to about 30 to 35 lbs. Yes, he’s adorable. But … [Read more...] about The Answer To Whether I’m Too Old To Get Another Dog

Giant Cosmic Explosion May Be Biggest Since Human Civilization Began, Say Scientists
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The most powerful class of explosions in the universe—a gamma-ray burst—reached the solar system on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022. It was 70 times brighter than any yet seen. A telescope on the International Space Station sensed it. So did NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and scores of satellites. It was even detected by the Voyager 1 probe now in interstellar space. The subject of a special edition of The Astrophysical Journal Letters this week, this pulse of intense radiation has been called the “BOAT”—the brightest of all time—but what was it? “GRB 221009A was likely the brightest burst at X-ray and gamma-ray energies to occur since human civilization began,” said Eric Burns, LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy assistant professor. He led research into about 7,000 gamma-ray bursts and concluded that events like GRB 221009A occur roughly once in every 10,000 years. Gamma-ray bursts are thought to … [Read more...] about Giant Cosmic Explosion May Be Biggest Since Human Civilization Began, Say Scientists
