Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin About twenty-five years ago, Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen coined the term “disruptive innovation.” I worked with Clay for many years building his consulting practice, and I can tell you that he had no idea the concept would take off as it did. Nor did he suspect that interpretations of the concept would become so mangled. It was one of his regrets that he didn’t call disruptive innovation by a more precise name that might preclude it from being stretched – in common parlance – to cover almost anything. As Clay laid it out and proved through extraordinarily detailed research, disruptive innovation occurs when a new offering caters to an overlooked customer segment through providing greater accessibility – which might come in forms such as low price, ease of learning, extreme convenience, and so on. Incumbents usually neglect these offerings because they aren’t as financially appealing (at first!) as … [Read more...] about Three Disciplines For Achieving Disruptive Innovation Through Costovation

China’s Tencent reports first revenue drop as gaming regulations and Covid-19 bite
- A + A HONG KONG (Aug 17): China's Tencent Holdings suffered its first ever quarterly sales fall on Wednesday (Aug 17), hurt by a government clampdown on game approvals and playing time as well as Covid-19 lockdowns and a weakening economy that squeezed ad sales. The contraction marks a nadir for the gaming giant and owner of the WeChat messaging platform which has reported double-digit growth almost every quarter since it went public in 2004, as Beijing's crackdown on big tech companies that began in late 2020 puts the brakes on its expansion. Tencent plans to sell all or a bulk of its US$24 billion stake in food delivery firm Meituan to placate domestic regulators, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The company said on Wednesday revenue declined 3% to 134 billion yuan (US$19.78 billion) for the three months ended June 30 from 138.3 billion yuan a year earlier. It has fallen for two straight quarters and analysts were anticipating the decline. "During the second … [Read more...] about China’s Tencent reports first revenue drop as gaming regulations and Covid-19 bite

Why over-the-counter hearing aids could be the next tech bonanza
By mid-October, the hearing aid industry will be fully in the throes of a revolution—one that’s been a long time coming. And it could open up a new, lucrative area for tech companies and be a real boon to consumers, too. advertisement advertisement On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it would let some hearing aids be sold over-the-counter for the first time, a move that will make the assistance devices much more widely available and, in all likelihood, significantly cheaper. It’s a move that has been increasingly important, as hearing loss is expected to rise dramatically in the coming decades. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that by 2030, nearly 630 million people worldwide will have a hearing disability. By 2050, that could jump to 900 million, in part because of regular exposure to loud sounds at work and in people’s personal lives (such as listening to music in earphones). Currently, 15% of … [Read more...] about Why over-the-counter hearing aids could be the next tech bonanza
Antitrust agency builds capability to battle cartels
The Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) is setting up a digital forensics laboratory to develop its capacity to investigate cartels or abuses of dominance by big businesses. The independent, quasi-judicial, antitrust body formed to implement the Philippine Competition Act (PCA or Republic Act No. 10667) said the laboratory would have specialized forensics equipment, software, as well other tools useful for their operatives. “The development of PCC’s digital forensics capacity is a major asset for our enforcement team,” PCC officer-in-charge Johannes Bernabe said in a press statement on Wednesday. He added that the use of digital forensics would allow their investigators to uncover trails of electronic transactions or documents that point to cartels or collusions. PCC investigators will also undergo proficiency trainings and accreditation on the use of digital forensics equipment. The commission said further that it would deepen its partnership with the National Bureau of … [Read more...] about Antitrust agency builds capability to battle cartels
