Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The company you used to know, clunkily, as ViacomCBS is now Paramount Global, tapping the mid-sized media company’s oldest brand. More importantly, Paramount executives spent an afternoon publicly committing their company to a direct-to-consumer, streaming future that bends every corner of the operation to its success. Company Board Chair Shari Redstone, CEO Bob Bakish, a host of company executives and such notable collaborators as Tom Cruise ( Top Gun Maverick, the next two Mission: Impossible films), JJ Abrams (multiple Star Trek projects), John Krasinski ( A Quiet Place) and Taylor Sheridan ( Yellowstone, 1883 ) spent two hours detailing the breadth of the company’s commitment to streaming, followed by 30 minutes of analyst questions. The big announcements, and there were many of them, come after years of half-hearted investments that led to so-so products substantially ignored by the market. Australia’s Supercomputer Captured Incredible Images Of a Dying Star
(CTN News) – Stunning images of a dying star have been captured by an Australian supercomputer. For scientists to transform data from the Askap (Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder) telescope array into real images, a supercomputer was required. For processing and converting into science-ready images, Askap data was transferred to the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre in Perth, Western Australia. A new supercomputer called Setonix – named after Australia’s favourite animal, the quokka, aka Setonix brachyurus – produced the final images, which included the traces of a dying star. CSIRO operates Askap, which consists of 36 dish antennas that work together as one telescope. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are the remains of powerful explosions from dying stars. Located 10,000 to 15,000 light-years away, the star is more than a million years old! Scientists will be able to study the supernova in unprecedented detail thanks to the image. We are in the … [Read more...] about Australia’s Supercomputer Captured Incredible Images Of a Dying Star

In A New Initiative, The U.S. Coast Guard Targets Illegal Fishing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After a long absence, fish and fishery patrols are back as a U.S. Coast Guard priority. In a little-noticed event earlier this month, the U.S. Coast Guard announced a new focus on “ Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing ,” sketching out a broad plan to track and, in time, start rolling back the systemic—and often State-based—depredation of seas worldwide. While the announcement was crafted to reflect a mere status-oriented “Outlook” on the scourge of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, the rollout at the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington had all the trappings of a fully committed, “all-of-government” strategy. Flanked by Admiral Craig S. Faller, head of Southern Command, Tim Gallaudet, the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Dr. Benjamin Purser, a Deputy Assistant Secretary at the State Department, the … [Read more...] about In A New Initiative, The U.S. Coast Guard Targets Illegal Fishing

With Prashant Kishor gone, Congress is back to square one
Representative Image REUTERS It was a bit surprising to read the news that poll strategist Prashant Kishor declined to join the Congress — after all, this might have been the first (and by far only) publicised vetting process for anyone joining a political party in India. India’s grand old party is what it is: grand and old. It has the weight of its legacy which has meant that change is not easily welcome, and its ways are old. This refusal to budge might be because its top array of leaders/office bearers are comfortably numb in the quicksand the party finds itself today. They say the house always wins: here the organisational setup of the Indian National Congress has won this round; the party workers and leaders longing for change have lost in the process. Wanted: A Disrupter A media report, quoted a source inside the Congress as saying, "The difference was on how to execute the revival. PK wanted to be a disruptor. The party wanted incremental changes" . To … [Read more...] about With Prashant Kishor gone, Congress is back to square one
