Statements recorded from duo over rally

July 3, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

JOHOR BARU: Johor DAP vice-chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali and Shah Alam MP Khalid Abd Samad have been questioned by the police for attending an anti-price hike rally in Kuala Lumpur.

The former Paloh assemblyman said he and Khalid were called in to the Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday to have their statements recorded.

He said they were questioned over their presence at the anti-price hike rally at Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru on Friday afternoon.

"The statement recording process was done in around 40 minutes," said Sheikh Umar, who was accompanied by his lawyer Syahredzan Johan.

On June 22, Sheikh Umar urged the public to gather in the streets of Kuala Lumpur to signal their frustrations at the government over the rising cost of living.

This prompted Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar to issue a statement several days later to say that there were many constructive ways to address the issue but holding street protests was not among them.

His Majesty said he was against the street rallies proposed by the DAP leader to pressure the government on the issue, adding that it was not a responsible way of finding a solution to the problem.
