Kingwood had one goal in mind when it took the field against Cinco Ranch Friday afternoon.

The Lady Mustangs wanted to get off to a fast start in their Region III-6A semifinal match at Abshier Stadium – Kingwood delivered.

“I wanted three goals in the first half,” said Kingwood head coach Pres Holcomb. “I wanted the girls to think about that. We wanted to get them out on the ropes to start the game and we did. We wanted to get the ball from them because they’re a tough team. We came out and accomplished what we wanted to do.”

Kingwood shut out Cinco Ranch 3-0 to advance to the Region III-6A final for the first time since 2010.

This is the first time under Holcomb that the Lady Mustangs have advanced to the regional final.

Kingwood will take on Katy Tompkins, who defeated Atascocita in penalty kicks in the other Region III-6A semifinal, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Abshier Stadium in the Region III-6A final with a chance to advance to the state tournament.

Cinco Ranch ends the season 14-6-3.

Kingwood (22-1-3) and Katy Tompkins will meet in the playoffs for the third straight year with the Lady Falcons ending the Lady Mustangs’ seasons the last two years.

“It’s fun to meet Tompkins again,” Holcomb said. “They’re a good team and an undefeated team. I think we have some strategies where we can put our players in good positions to score and defend, but I think we’re ready for them.”

The Mustangs scored all of their goals in the first half as Jenelle Dumais scored off a corner kick at the 35:52 mark in the first half.

Elle Smith scored the second goal with the assists coming from Emma Ebert.

After a Lady Falcons yellow card, the Lady Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick.

Catherine Childs took advantage of the penalty kick and hit the net to put the Lady Mustangs up 3-0 at halftime.

“We have been playing great offensively lately,” Holcomb said. “The second half was about managing the time and we did that. It was hard to do because they’re a great team and you know they’re going to keep on coming after you.”

Mikayla Carlos held her own protecting the net for the Lady Mustangs by not allowing a goal.

“Our defense has been doing great and we haven’t allowed a lot of goals as a whole,” Holcomb said. “She (Mikayla) did a great job back there and she has done that all year for us.”
