MEGHAN Markle’s first big royal job was revealed by mistake, it can be revealed.
The Duchess of Sussex will take over as patron of the National Theatre from The Queen – with the arts venue accidentally sharing the news online a day before the official announcement.
A screenshot taken by The Telegraph shows the message, dated January 10, saying: “The Duchess of Sussex announced as our new Royal Patron.”
The news was accompanied by a photograph of a beaming Meghan.
The role is a vote of confidence from the Queen for the former actress after she joined the Royal Family last year.
Meghan, 37, is seen as a “natural fit” for the position with her experience in acting – having rose to fame playing the role of Rachel in the hit show Suits.
The Duchess is said to have discussed the role when she met with Rufus Norris, the director of the National Theatre.
Meghan, who also studied theatre at university, will get involved with The American Associates of the National Theatre, which contributes £3million a year to its output.
The appointment as patron is made by Her Majesty and will be seen as a huge boost for Meghan after rumours of a tricky start to life as a royal.
She is a theatre lover and last year went with Prince Harry, 34, to a benefit performance of hit musical Hamilton.
It was the third time Meghan has seen the hit West End show after the pair saw the show in February.
Meghan also went to see the show with her friend and fellow actress Priyanka Chopra in New York.
It will be a busy year for Meghan, who is expecting her first child with Prince Harry in the Spring.
The couple, who married in May last year, are also expecting to move to Frogmore Cottage ahead of their baby’s arrival.
The National Theatre opened in 1963 with Sir Laurence Olivier its artistic director.
It moved to its home on the South Bank in London in 1976.
A theatre spokeswoman declined to comment.
Kensington Palace would not confirm the patronage.
