Mall of America’s new skating rink, called Skate the Star, is set to open Saturday in front of the mall’s North entrance. The 9:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting will include a performance by the District 196 Icettes Figure Skating Team. The ice opens to the public at 10 a.m. The first 200 skaters will receive a holiday ornament courtesy of Mall of America. Local company Minnesota Ice is constructing the rink, built around the mall’s Star Sculpture. The 12,000-square-foot rink can handle about 200 skaters at once, according to Jill Renslow, senior vice president of Business Development. It’s refrigerated, so it will be skatable no matter the temperature. Skating is free if you bring your own skates. Or rent a pair for $5, with 100 percent of the sales going to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.
