AN Irish tourist has admitted to causing damage to a memorial at Auschwitz, the former Nazi concentration camp. The man, whose name has not been released, was detained by security guards at the site in Poland last Sunday. It is understood he scratched his name on a wall at the site. The tourist, who is believed to be aged 38, was charged in the nearby town of Oswiecim after he admitted defacing the memorial. RTÉ has reported that the man agreed to a punishment, which will be made public after a court hearing. The court process will not conclude for anther two months, but the man was released and is not expected to have to return to Poland for the hearing. According to local reports, he claimed to have seen other people’s names on the wall before scratching his own name on the wall. More than one million people were killed by the Nazis at Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945.
