State golf roundup: Aurora senior Caleb Badura leads in bid for repeat title

May 21, 2018 by www.omaha.com

COLUMBUS, Neb. — Caleb Badura stuck to his game plan.

After two bogeys in the first three holes in the Class B boys golf state tournament at Quail Run, the Aurora senior played the rest of the course in 2-under.

The defending Class B state champion sits in first place with a 72, three strokes ahead of Platteview’s Jordan Hart, going into Wednesday’s final round.

“I always seem to get off to slow starts here at state, but I knew I could bounce back,’’ Badura said.

York leads the team race with a 317, six strokes ahead of Beatrice.

— Marc Zavala, World-Herald News Service

Class C

At Kearney Country Club, Creighton senior Chase Largen made 17 pars and one birdie for a 1-under 70 and a one-stroke lead over Bridgeport senior Eric Stevens.

Elmwood-Murdock heads a tight team race. The Knights, with Nolan Langfeldt shooting a team-low 76, are in first with a team score of 318. Hartington Cedar Catholic is a stroke back and Grand Island Central Catholic is two back.

“I was not hitting my irons well at all,” said Largen, who was fifth last year. “I was getting up and down 12, 13 times today. I wasn’t hitting greens. I was chipping it close and making my putts.”

— Dan Zielinski, World-Herald News Service

Class D

At Lake Maloney in North Platte, defending champion West Holt grabbed a 10-stroke lead over Franklin while Loomis senior Andrew Lauby’s 73 gave him a two-stroke cushion.

“The scoring conditions were really good today,” West Holt coach Todd Hale said. “I thought we played like we needed to on the first day and got a comfortable start where we won’t have to chase after another team.”

Mason Hale’s 77 and sophomore Garrison Hansen’s 78, a career low, paced the Huskies.

Lauby made only two pars on the front nine. He had four birdies and three bogeys while staying under par with a 35, then finished with a two-bogey back nine.

He didn’t qualify for state last year and tied for 25th in 2016.
